we all know that the term 'boot' refers to a dark/moldy fish, but does anybody know how the term 'boot' came about?
my theory is that the stereotypical cliche (usually in cartoons)of catching old tires and boots has to do with it. maybe somebody kept a real dark fish and their wife(not knowing anything about fishing) thought about that cliche and made a connection. am i making sense?
if any of you know the real origin or have your own theories id like to hear them.

Same colour as an old gum boot and tastes just as good.

because the dolts that snagged it and dragged it up on the rocks probably BOOTED it back into the water.

Remember when those black hip waders were popular? They were going out of style when I was very young, and then only the old grizzled guys wore them.
Maybe something to do with them?
Never see those boots anymore that Ive noticed.
