Out of curiousity... what do you all think about treble hooks (since it seems to be a bit of a hot topic)? And I know most people have their opinions about flossing, but, if you think that flossing is ok for a meat harvest, then so should treble hooks.
I don't like treble hooks because I have gotten used to not using them, and because they are a bit excessive for the kind of fish we have on the coast.
I don't like flossing because its not my idea of a good time. Especially when the f**king loosers get out there and get all territorial. However, I am not against it so long as that fishery is managed.
Anyways, anyone care to give some thoughts on this? Anyone from ontario still kicking around (care to know what flossing is?) ?

I hate treble hooks. can't stand taking them out of a fish and can't stand taking them out of me. ;)

I am not a super experienced salmon fisherman but I still don't see the need for Treble hooks.fresh or salt Someone with more experience on the saltchuck could comment about that but If we are calling it sport fishing I think we should give the fish a better chance. One man's opinion.

Hi there J5, myself, I'm not in approval of trebles at all. There's very little need to use them when were dealing with such a valuable resource that is in a decline. I would say if we were in a part of the world where starvation is prevalent then it's necessary. But on the West Coast of Canada, no.

I work with a guy who's always telling me about his spark plug and treble hook. Thank God he's always too drunk to make it to the river.

I hate how on the shows they use those lures with 3 triples. Thats not very sporty.

This is very interesting. We don't view trebles the same way here. I guess its because we tend to use more crankbaits than anything else. I use siwash hooks on my lighter spoons and don't really notice any particular difference in the ability to unhook the fish. I tend to use very thin trebles which release quickly and are less likley to cause large hook holes that are caused by using superlines ( I have written an article on superlines and hook holes). Thinner trebles can also be cut quickly if need be.
What is 'flossing'??
We have a very nasty technique here called 'lining' in which an angler (to use the term loosley) uses a floating bait such as a marshmallow that has a weight about a foot up and passing fish get the line in their mouths which then gets the mallow in their mouth and then comes the hookset. So technically they are hooking the fish 'by the mouth' which makes it legal...but still not condoned by most.

Lining and flossing is the same. Different terms but the result is the same.

Would be easier to catch fish with treble hooks but the challenge of a single hook is cool! Question, why do they allow trebles in the ocean? When i went to Ucluelet this summer that is all we used! ???

Treb's are illegal in some parts of the ocean. I.E. Georgia Straight. The traditional meathod of fishing with cut plugs and live hearing is always with treb's. Better chance of a hook up. As with most of these post, there is also a better chance of an in-boat hook up...OUCH!
Don't use them.

Well, I find that the fish bite best when you floss using a treble hook baited with TNT.

Grumman triples are not allowed in the straight? Ive seen many guys useing a barbless triple setup for herring. I never fish herring so i never use them but i thought they were legal? Also we fished a single triple rig in port. We lost a spring about 40 when the hook straightened out :'( They dont hold fish as well and we had gamagatsus. We sent them the hook back in anger also we sent a coyote spoon back after it was demolished by a 15 pound spring???? ???

Can someone tell me a good online source for all the regulations?? I'm from out east and it's very confusing trying to keep track of when certain seasons open and close, and which type of hooks and bait can be used in which parts. I have the guide but it seems to me the regulations change throughout the season here. I usually just fish the Capilano, and I'm pretty sure that only single barbless hooks are allowed there, but what about when you fish in the ocean at the mouth??? And what about if you catch a Coho or a spring or something in the ocean, is it regulated different than if it was fresh water? If someone could just point me in the right direction, it would be much appreciated. ;D

That's what I said Kelly. No trebs in the straight. Too bad about that Gammie. I use them almost exclusively. They are sharper, but they are soft. I've straightened them on a log before, but not a fish ???
