Title: Salmon ID?
Post by: Koho on September 24, 2004, 01:05:05 PM
Since there was some… confusion, on the salmon species in another thread, I thought we could do a quiz on identifying this bright chromer posted on another site.  This was posted on Sept 10 this year and caught in a tributary of the Columbia River.

So what do you think it is?  A dandy Coho, Chinook, Chum?  Sockeye or Pink?  And why?

No weight or length was provided but you can guess from the pic.

The answer according to the fisherman will be provided later.  BTW the photo has not been cropped or edited except for the copyright added by the poster…

Its not a steelhead.  Its one of the 5 Pacific salmon species to make it a little easier.  :)

Coho.... Unless they clip Chinook down there which I doubt.

Or a Chum, has a white anal fin. ::)

If it was caught on the Columbia system, then it would be a "King".  White anal fin.  Looks like black gums.  Colour and spots look more like Coho though.

Hey is that one of those Coho/Chinook hybrids ;)

That bottom one looks black.  Difficult to tell on a monitor and too much glare coming of that fish.

Doc SG: I REALLY wish I did catch that fish.  Would be quite the chrome specimen for an Ontario fish...

gogetum: the prize... well I haven't thought about it... how about a big  ;D
for those who get it right.

...but the test is worth 10% of the total mark, right fish_4_life?   ;)

if this wasn't a trick question i'd say coho all the way, because of the white gums. but i'll tell ya the head sure   looks alot like 'sockeye'. ???

i don't suppose you could post a pic of the tail, flared out?

at a first glance id say coho, but i would like to see the base of the gums not the upper gum line as that can be misleading  :o, " regs say look at gum base for white or black"
also the tail fin would be nice to check out   ???

but either way its a hatchery " BONK IT QUICK" lol
dont want it infecting wild stocks  :P

Here's the prize.

Here's the original post and the discussion.

Chrome salmon species discussion (http://www.piscatorialpursuits.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=019092)

There was no tail shot but there was a closeup of the mouth.  They even talked about the possibility of coho/chinook hybrids.  Looks like the camera had a difficult time dealing with the intense bright fish and so the mouth somehow turned whitish.
