I know that the general consensus is that chums are nasty fish... but I like catching them anyways... never keep them... but then I rarely keep any socks or hos or springs for that matter.
So I was just wondering is anybody knew when they entered the Squamish river? I wanna take a friend who is a beginner flyfisherman out there because there is more room.
Thanks for any info you guys can provide.

personally, i think a fresh spring is the hardest fighting.
-
pound for pound is the comparison i like - because can you imagine what a 40 pound chum would do to yor gear.

Love to watch the kid c&r them. This is the fishery I take my kids friends to to get them hooked on fishing!

I was at the Mamquam last week. I hooked on pink, which i lost right before shore.. :'(...and i hooked on more fish wasnt sure what it was. ???
-
you sure it was a pink? i didn't think the went into rivers this year
-
i thought he meant he hooked "it" on pink wool?

Dennisk, those chums are nuts, especially Squampton ones. But they are no Steelhead. Pound for pound the Steelhead is the sports model on our coast.

Another vote for chums. Great fighting fish.

Yup, chums put up an awesome fight. And when you release the hook at the end, they snarl at you with their canine teeth.

Redeye,
To answer your original question I have found them in the Squamish from mid October to the end of November. They are a bit scarce at the beginning, and more than a bit scary at the end.
Yeah, and some parts of the river are very crowded, and a major gong show that at times puts the Vedder in prime Coho season or Fraser sockeye bars to shame.
I usually keep some clean ones and they are great in the smoker, and ok fresh in my opinion.

Caught any yet CF?

Thanks Fulcrum, gman and CF for the info.

Getting back on subject I agee with Rod. Pound for pound a fresh chum fights like nothing else. My personl best was a 28lb beast on my 9wt fly rod. That fish worked me so hard I was tempted to brake it off. When I finally brought it to hand, I had to let it go. I figured any fish that can fight that hard deserves to go and do what it came for. The guys standing around couldn't believe I would let a clean fish that size go.

The Squamish does have an even year pink run. They are in there but it is strictly 0 retention. DFO is trying to resestablish the run.
