Title: Tamihi Creek
Post by: reach on August 22, 2004, 10:13:59 PM
Hi all,

We went up to Tamihi Bridge planning to go fly fishing for trout in the Chilliwack River.  But due to yesterday's rain, the river had risen a bit and was quite silty, and we didn't feel like wading when we couldn't see.  So we drove up the Tamihi FSR a few kilometers and fished Tamihi Creek instead.

There were plenty of juvenile Rainbows, enough to keep the action going all afternoon.  It's a great small stream to practice casting for us newbies to fly fishing.  We were using bead head olive leeches and hare's ears.  Mostly the fish were only 5 or 6 inches, but we got one 9 or 10" and just at the end of the day, found a nice pool lower down the creek and got one nice 11 or 12 incher.

It's great living in a place where you've got wilderness like that less than an hour's drive away.  It makes a person a little nervous to see the sheer volume of shell casings (shotgun, rifle, handgun, you name it) and shot up trees and beer cans up there, but the stream is nice.

Ya listen to canoe man... those are words of wisdom.. the last time I wore my moose antlers while fishing a young female cow tried to mate with me.... not to mention the tangles I got from casting my flyline.... :o

Reach dude, isn't the Tamihi completely closed to fishing? I didn't know any Vedder tribs were open. Not sure, anyone?

Regs for Tamihi are as follows
-closed below the falls 200 m. upstream of Chwk River
-closed above the falls 200 m. upstream of Chwk River, May 1 - June 30.

This fishery is a delicate fishery with generally small fish. The regs here are of course single barbless hooks, hatchery fish only, limit of two daily and must be 30 cm. in length.

I hope folks would use fly only here as worms etc would do a lot of harm to these small fish as there are few in this area that are hatchery or large enough to keep.

Also,  using live bait such as worms can result in deep hooking as a fish will literally EAT(swallow) the worm.  Since there is a size limit and it sounds like the general size is smaller than the size you are allowed to take,  this could result in many fish released with hooks deep in the mouth,  or worse yet,  a fish released belly up when someone forcefully tries to remove a hook.  Lets try our best to keep this resource alive  :)

Tamahi should be left alone when you have good opporunities in the Vedder, lots of decent trout in the bug holes.

Well we were doing strictly catch & release with flies only.  I didn't see all of my buddy's fish but the 6 or 8 I caught were all very vigorous when released and certainly weren't deep hooked.  As I mentioned we didn't feel comfortable fishing the Vedder.  By the time we came out it had calmed down & cleared up a bit, but it was still a bit intimidating for us rookies.

Our intention is certainly not to damage any resource.  If we wanted to do that we'd go down to the lower river and floss for springs.  (duck and cover)  ;D

BTW, what are "bug holes"?  Side channels/backwater sloughs?

sorry typo, meant big holes like the boulder by the campsite at Tamahi, always lots of action in them.
Cheers
