Title: Bass Fishing Techniques
Post by: anglertill_death21 on February 17, 2026, 12:26:52 AM
I heard of Cultus Lake being a good spot to try for Smallmouth Bass. This is my first time bass fishing and want to try this spot :D. I have two questions:

1. What moths and times are good for fishing in this lake for bass?

2. What should I use to target these bass? I know the commons answer is worms on a hook but I want to do lure fishing, so should I use plastic worms, crankbaits, chatterbaits, etc...?

Well the truth is.     If you use the right moth!  You will notice the time doesn’t matter it’s all about that moth.

you should subscribe to the Pacific Angler Report as they do regularly mention Bass Fishing in the Fraser Valley;

Bass are waking up and they are hungry. Look for warm days and throw to cover. I like soft plastics like the Daiwa Neko fat on a weedless Texas rig for ease of use, but the shop favorite for lethargic bass is a ned jig with a Crush City “Ned BLT” now if any of that makes sense to you come on in and we can talk bass. This is prime time for bank anglers as the vegetation is low and you will have more water to hit.

if you scroll to the bottom of the page there is a spot to enter an email address and you'll get them every week. As the forecast is for a week or so of warm dry weather bass will wake up and move into shallows to feed and look for nesting areas.

FWIW when bass move into the shallows is the easiest time to find and target them. I dont do much bass fishing anymore and have little experience with Cultus, but back in the day I used to do a yearly trip to Saltspring for bass in May and we always did well. If I recall, there was even retention closures on SMB during May(?) to protect spawners, so I think that the season should be coming soon, for those that want to give it a try
