Title: leader length???
Post by: bigguy on August 12, 2004, 10:41:12 PM
I can live with 10feet, maybe 14  but there are guys at peg leg using at least 20' feet maybe more!  Woow! i am surprised that someone hasnt been snagged in the face!  How do u control 20'  I find it tough with ten especially with guys standing 3-5' away from each other!

not that i go and snag fish but it is easy to cast 20 +' just tie the corky off the tag end of the hook and it keeps the hook floating...i used to go sockeye snaging

20ft now thats a real good one. i tell ya that guy ahad better watch that thing as hes sure to snag some poor fisherman. using one that long is surely a sign of a inexperienced fisherman and that if they continue to use ones that long there could be leader restrictions in the futer >:(

I have seen a guy last year that has such a long leader, when he hooked up, he had to walk up the bar, to get the fish out the water, cause his betty was up against the rod... it must have been way longer than 20FT... When he cast the monster out, it sounder like a whip.

I was trying to figure out the path of the hook when you cast with a leader. Does anyone know which direction it would go? If its behind you about ten feet and you cast overhand does it follow the swing of the rod? or does it snap straight out when it grabs? What if it's beside you? or under you? Different lengths change the path? and blah blah on and on? <--- too many different scenarios to mention. Insight please.

I consistantly use a 16 ft leader. But I am a little weary about using it. I make sure my directly behing me. Last sunday my dad embedded a hook right to the eye in his cheek. And he only uses an 8ft leader. Good thing it was barbless. :-\

never mind a 30 foot leader, you can have a 200 foot leader just by tying your BBetty onto the very end of your line. about 15 feet up from the end of the line, tie the line into a palomar knot and add your hook. cast out with all your might and you've got yourself a 200 foot + long leader that bounces along and flosses the fish. AND, because your weight is at the END, you wont get nailed by DFO for leader length.

please note the SARCASM in my post......... 8)
