Title: Reading the water and fish

So what can you guys tell me about reading water and fish? I'm sure there must be a way to say, "Ok, the Coho are running up the Vedder, it's X temperature and the river is at X level, they'll be more likely to find food near the surface or at the bottom."
How do I get a better idea of how to fish certain pools? Or whether or not to try the pools?
Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Nester. salmonids feed no more after entering the fresh. You have to use their agresion to catch them.
All species behave slightly diferent. You will find cohos
 in spots where they were pushed out by brute springs.
tailouts and slack water is example. Observe them in hatchery channel and see how coho yelds to springs.
Good reading the water comes with expierience on the flow, so get out and go at it. :)

Check your local library for books on stream fishing.  They are helpful in finding out how fish will behave in certain water conditions and where they will likely be.  Remember, identify the species you are fishing for as well as the other species that will be present in the river/stream.  The biggest fish get the best spots.  So, if you want Coho and there are Springs and Chum in the river, then the Coho are not likely to be in the best spot.  Fish the edge of the riffle, the slow pool/eddy.  The big ones will be sittling in the smooth water at the bottom of the river under cover of the white water or riffles.  Nothing works like experience.  Go fishing, enjoy the surroundings and learn from watching others (except the guy's that swing their rod like a baseball bat on the vedder).
