"Natives are out of control" "illegal driftnetting" "FN aggression"
These are some of the type of statements I read here nearly on a daily basis.
Every time I have run into FN people on the river or off I have been treated with respect.
I have not witnessed an illegal fishing act done by a FN member! I am saying that some FN members probably fish illegaly. Bad apples and all.... But I've yet to see it. I have no way of objectively measuring the scope of the problem.
I WANT PROOF !
So many of us go to the river with cameras to record our catches. Have some of us ever take pics of the FN members in their illegal fishery??
Could you imagine! A FN member with an attitude decides to do this driftnetting so many of you have witnessed, as he drifts past the 200-300 rods on Grassy, the hundreds of flashes go off recording his every illegal act.
Pics get published... FN starts to get bad press... FN band starts to discipline its own members, now that they have the proof.
Every time the recreational fishermen see illegal acts they light up the bar with hundreds of flashes.
Possible?

many many reports of night time drift netting on this forum and elswere, was also told today by a commercial fishing buddy that my local reserve has and is fishing at will despite having at east one net impounded.

if i had a camera with night vision capability, i would be on the river each and every night until these ******* are shut down forever. >:(
NOTE please note that when i say "shut down forever", i mean the few bad apples that illegal drift net at all hours of the night.
not the fishers that actually respect the law and the environment.

Yes I've read many many reports on this subject. I am curious as to why , with so many reports and so many cameras taken to the rivers to record catches... We never... or rarely ever see pictures.
A report is just talk ... I mean it can be embellished or twisted to suit an agenda.
Fact often becomes fiction in the retelling.
Pictures and video are stronger links to the event and are harder to manipulate.

Why are sport fisherman getting so mad at the FN members of illegal fishing? Sport fisherman do the same. Some keep more than there legal limit, they use barbed hooks, they keep species of fish that are protected also. I don't like the fact that they get extra privalidges but I can deal with it. It seems to me that only the poeple that don't get their limit are the ones that get ticked off about all of this. If the Natives are getting "attacked" here then so should the Sportfishermen. We all need to follow the rules here.

Well most of the people that post here do follow the rules. And FN are getting "attacked" because a hundred guys can break the rules and hurt the river less than a 2 guys and a couple of nets.
Thats what I think anyways. And I think you're wrong. They don't choose sides on here as to who they slam, everyones open season.

my friends came for a visit from the UK. they left in disgust after seeing the butchering on the water, both by illegal snagging 9tailfin, scales, stomach etc) and drift netting.
real nice way to promote the province.

There is illegal fishing on all sides. I think most of the attack is at the FN because of the scale of the abuse. How many fish killed by nets vs. rod & reel?

I suspect the "bad apples" on all sides of illegal fishing would be slowed best with pictures.
My instinct tells me photos and video are tools we could harness in the fight against all illegal fishing.
Although we have never met, My instinct tells me that Chris is a "reputable gentalmen " as well.

If you want proof, why don't you take a video camera with you next time you go Sockeye fishing. If you don't have one, I'm sure that you could borrow one from a friend. You could ask the whole bar to stop fishing while you wade out and film the driftnetting. You also seem to know where this illegal action occurs, as you mentioned Grassy in your opening post. While you are at it, you can video any recreationals landing and bonkig a foul hooked fish!!! and send a copy to DFO (if the camera doesn't get thrown into the river).

Yes I could go to grassy and film and I might get some proof... One man one camera...
But I think the alleged illegal FN netter might get spooked if he saw 50-60 flashed going off at the same time.
Could you imagine the FN reaction as he realized the whole bank was taking pics of his (alleged) illegal act?

"Operation Barbeque " will see the proof presented , I hope CJ will be there to support it and see the presentation of the proof.
Also for your info 100's of reports of illegal fishing have been phoned to FOC this year and no action has been taken. Why? The reason is the enforcement staff has been told by the FOC managers to lay off them, that I am sorry to tell you is the bottom line.

It will have to be on a weekday as that is when the FOC offices are open. It will be a morning Barby so as to be able to hit the noon news on TV live.
The last time we did it a few years ago we had every news outlet there, it was great and we made our point which was to give the sport anglers some sockeye in the river when every other user was getting them.
A couple of days later we had a opening too. Now I do not even fish for them as most on this board know why but the important thing this time is we have to force FOC and the rest of the agencies to enforce the law as our democratic society is based on abiding the law of the land. It you do not you are charged and punished.
The ones doing the illegal fishing should not be allowed to do so or this is the begginning of anarchy as far as I am concerned.
CJ I hope you got the PM that requests you attempt to get some evidence be it on film or video to help the cause when you are out fishing.

The answer is no as I never write what I am not 100% sure of.
The volume and scope of the (alleged) illegal FN fishery needs more research on my part before I start writing letters based on ( well intentioned) but 3rd hand information.
I am not much of a band wagon jumper... but when I get there you'll know.

Start with FOC as they have piles of info but good luck trying to obtain it. Freedom of Information Act if you wish but----.
On the file about the Fisheries Officers held hostage In the Agassiz Bridge area last year the local paper spend a fair amount of money trying to get the information from the RCMP but they have no luck on that to date. SDA will be looking at it also I believe.

The old fart that bonked the salmon over my protestations was not a FN member. He was not part of an illegal FN fishery.
All of us here have seen idiots of all colours keep the occasional snagged Sock ... thats not what this discussion is about... although we all seem to agree more enforcement is needed for these infractions as well.

Way too much mud slinging and personal insults simply because some people take exception to another point of view. As Rodney pointed out couple of weeks back have RESPECT for others.
