Title: Keeping your catch fresh (revisitted)
Post by: Gooey on August 04, 2004, 04:36:06 PM
Just thought I would provide a little feedback from something new I did this weekend.  After having 2 springs go a little soft after sitting on the bar too long, I decided to bring a cooler.

I got a styrofoam cooler and lid and into it went 3 frozen 1 ltr water bottles.  That ice kept the fish quite cool all day.  Now you're probably thinking how do you move fish in a styro cooler??

I had a aluminum frame knapsac,  into that went the fish at the end of the day, and I tied the empty cooler to the knapsac.hiked out with 2 free hands (dad had the rods).  But most importantly is my fish were still firm by the time I got home!

There's no way I'm carrying a cooler to the river with me. That would be like me bringing a condom to a nightclub, what a waste of time.

For you, from what I hear so far regarding your catch rate - Yes, it would be.

I had one big cooler (weighs 2 lbs if that), it fit our 6 soxs and the spring!

I cleaned my sping almost immediately and stuck one of the frozen 1L bottles in the body cavity so that fish was chilled thru.

Sorry to hear about your bad luck in the clubs and on the river RobertO...maybe its halitosis...but that doesnt explain not being able to catch a fish!  ;)

Ahh you just hit the nail on the head.. halitosis... that's why when I fish with CasinoJim he catches fish... cause he has fish breath. Wierd I never saw that connection.

Fish 4 life.
You can buy long styrofoam coolers at steavston marine.  Perfect for 30+lb.  There about $7 if I recall correctly.

if you dont want to buy em, sometimes, you can go to the places that make em, and they will give you their seconds for free.  there is one place I know of in Surrey, on either 128th or 132nd (sorry can't remember) near the translink bus service lot.  "Pacific" something.

Ya, over the years I picked a couple freebees up from albion fisheries whole sale outlet and one other fish wholesaler in vancouver.  Albion as I recall is 2 minutes south of Terminal Ave and west of clarke.

I still have the one I got for free 8+ years ago (minus the lid) so even $7 is worth it!

A huge $100 cooler is great if you have a boat, but it would suck hiking into a bar and even worse hiking out with fish!

The cool thing about the way I did it was that all my fish and the cooler went on my back for the walk out!
