Just another word of caution. With the Chilliwack Vedder River opening on July 1 be careful where you park and what you leave in your vehicle when out fishing.
Today when out checking out the river, by the Teskey Rock and Salmon Trail parking area (just above the Vedder Bridge) I saw 3 mounds of glass and a smashed out window of a white van so the smash and grab thieves are at work once again. :'(
-
Thanks for the heads up
-
Sadly, this is the best advice you can get while fishing the Vedder-LOCK your car, and make sure your don't have any valuables visible!
-
Going to print out this note and laminate it so I can put it in my window when I go fishing:
If you are a peace officer and wish to ticket or tow me, please consider first calling my cell phone at _ _ _ _ _ _ ....I am nearby and will gladly relocate my vehicle if you so wish.
If you are a thief wishing to smash my window and root through my vehicle for valuables, please consider first that I solemnly declare there are no valuables or goods in my vehicle and if you choose to do so anyways and I happen to come upon you, I have my 210 lb German Shepard with me and he doesn't like strangers ;)

Summer job for area university students.
Will baby sit your parked vehicle as you fish.
Regular 1 student sits in chair next to parked vehicle. $20 4 hrs.
Deluxe service 4 students with baseball bats sit on each side of vehicle. $80 4 hrs.
Extra hrs charged at $10 per regular service.
Extra hrs charged at $25 per deluxe service.
( students can read university books as they protect )

Damn, that works out to be 5 dollars an hour. Youre a mean employer ;)
-
I work up that way and I have yet to see a locked car stop anyone. Best thing to do is take your valuables with you then leave the car unlocked. They'll go through but at least they might leave your windows.

They might just smash your windows because you left them nothing to steal

Just saw a video posted on FB that the camp that was taken down a few months ago is all set up again in this area. :-X

;D Well better than asking for volunteers.
On a serious note having one's vehicle vandalized / property stolen after a planned outing is such a "downer".
Scum putting their presence on your property.
Anyone who breaks an auto window & steals is such a no brain dishonourable person.
Jails are full of these guys who are charged with theft.
Victim has to replace whatever was taken plus the hassle of going to ICBC...auto glass repair...
We all pay the extra $ because of theft.
Department stores insurance rates on & on...
Guess the thieves do create jobs for the police courts & jail system...plus sales of security personnel ,electronics, locks,...
These guys are sneaky to target a parked vehicle, but the bolder guys ( seen vid the other day. ) come up behind you / friend & attack. Once on the sidewalk they then steal your watch ring wallet...
These guys must be celebrating Canada Day. "We love Canada because when we do crime our freebie lawyer tells the nice judge how we have mental problems or how we were raised in a bad home & thus the judge gives us a "slap on the wrist".
Some other countries the punishment may be a bullet, hands cut off,in jail for years, that houses 5000 inmates. ( prison built to hold 800 ) ...
Oh & no color tv or phone or nice bed or tasty food.

Thats why you keep just a little bit of meth in the glove box.

That is akin to security theater. Thieves are a bit smarter then that and know that anglers often leave their vehicles for long periods of time. They also know that the RCMP are not everywhere and cannot always respond in a timely manner. There are some old threads and posts on this forum where people emptied their vehicles, left the doors unlocked, left a note, etc only to come back to find their windows smashed.
As for the threat of the dog, be careful. Defending a dog liability lawsuit, could proof costly, even if the dog does not attack nor bite a person.

Parking lots with high number of break-ins should have cameras installed.
-
Just between you and me Birkenhead, I don't own a dog.

Out by Teskey Rock and another van was broken in sometime this morning. The owner was there when I was and told me nothing stolen. Two broken windows and 2 flat tires. They had to call a tow truck :( :'(
-
That doesn't sound like crackheads but fisherman who don't want to share the river...
-
I walked out of a run a couple years ago and noticed "SNAGGERS" scratched in to the side of the only vehicle in the pullout besides mine. Guess whoever did the artwork must have gotten offended by someone's etiquette on the river and walked out and figured out who's car was who's by the pendent symbols hanging from the rear view

I've been toying with the idea of getting a no-glow trail camera and camoflaging it to keep an eye on my vehicle while fishing. If I'm one of the unlucky targeted vehicles - I'd love to ID the people responsible - passing their faces and vehicle info on to everyone on this site, plus the RCMP (this of course after I'd scoured the area for them to share my feelings).

Took a drive up to the Chilliwack River Hatchery yesterday and noticed more piles of glass at some more parking areas, so sad to see this continuing problem along the Chilliwack Vedder River.

Chris
Any fish in the hatchery channel?

I dont how practical it is but this is a good idea. Maybe once a few of them have been caught in the act and get their pics on the news they might think twice about who might be watching at any given time.

Yeah - practicality is an issue - problem I'm noodling at the moment is they are just so big and would be a bit tough to conceal. I'll be sure to post some pics if I do get one up and running. Love to share with the people of Chilliwack and the Lower Mainland who these shifty SoB's are.

Where is the camp?

Where is the camp?
Just above Teskey Rock, opposite the Salmon Trail parking area.

Chris

None that I could see, made a point of walking in and checked it out.
-
Where is teskey rock ?
-
Just upstream from Vedder Crossing.
-
Thats what I thought. I have a trailer at cultus lake and there were a lot of thefts from our area last year that the police said were most likely the work of that "camp". A buddy and I actually went there looking for some of his belongings, no luck. Not thrilled to hear they are back.
-
Not all doom and gloom out there.
I have been on the river 3 nights this week. I have not witnessed any broken glass, nor has my truck been broken into.
Leave nothing inside and there is no reason to have your window smashed.
-
Anyone know exactly where that camp is ? Have a friend looking for his bike trailer that went missing from cultus

Well that white van may have been a victim of mistaken vigilante justice. Someone might have mistaken that white van for one that sold someone some bogus speakers for a sweet deal. Two wrongs still don't make it right.

Really ?
I was up there Wed and saw 3 piles of broken glass at 3 different spots .... 1 at Tesky... 1 near Thompsom Park and 1 near Tamihi. It is def still happening.
But yeah... I also leave nothing inside.
I ran into a guy last season who had his window smashed on his truck. He said to me " something musta spooked 'em cause there is about $500 woth of gear in the back cab area, that is still there" ..... Insert head shake here ....
-
I choose to believe this is all a conspiracy theory / hoax by Chris and his cronies to try and keep prospective anglers off the sweetest runs so he can have all the fish to himself!!! ;)
-

Straight out from the Salmon Trail parking lot, you will see the well worn path that leads out to the camp.

Fished Brown Road today. Was my 4th stop of the morning, rolled in there around 10:30am. Three piles of glass in the plot where you could tell each was a smashed out window. Two of the vehicles were gone, just one left when I got there.
When I got to the river I ended up chatting with the guy whos truck was still there. He said earlier in the morning someone told them that several vehicles had been broken into. He walked back to his truck to find out yup, it was one of the ones that was hit.
He said no tools or other gear taken, he thinks they were after $$$ as literally nothing gone. But they did toss the vehicle pretty good, even the floor mats were pulled out.
Luckily, another vehicle in the plot had it's dash cam on! Guy said they could not make out the license plate, but it was a BLUE JIMMY. 2 ppl in it and the person seen smashing the windows was an "older lady." I was a bit surprised to hear the last part.
Anyway watch your vehicles, looks like we have a smash and grabber doing rounds today.
-
2 vehicles broke into this morning at the parking lot by the train bridge yarrow side. One was 2 american gentlemen who lost there passports.

Dude was wearing a wig

Dude looks like a lady.
