Title: Was This Wrong?
Post by: Novabonker on June 13, 2016, 03:47:37 PM
I'm at a freinds cabin on the lake in the interior. I was sitting having my coffee the other morning when I heard a ruckus down around the dock. 2 loons were attacking a mother duck and her offspring. I leapt down as quick as I could and chased the loons as best I could but they had killed 4 of the ducklings and the others seemed pretty messed up. I know the loons are protected but damn, I just couldn't watch that and not do anything. I didn't hurt them . I hate loons.

Nature over nurture.

Nature is brutal.

Saw a osprey killed by eagles before. Dive bombed to death.

All those cute little animals people love to have as domestic pets would eat us without batting an eye if they could fit us in their mouths.
Must be referring to cats

What a sight that must have been.
Yes nature is brutal sometimes. Powerful and beautiful.

Loons are the wolfs of a bird world. Quite scary with their red biddy eyes. I had seen them attack and devour goslings, ducklings,
and of course many of my hooked fish as well. Definitely not my favored bird but very impressive.

I probably would have done the same thing if it were right in front of me. Right or not.

I've been fishing the local lakes on a number of occasions when eagles start harassing the ducklings or goslings. Mother bird going nuts of course, as well as all the people and their kids out for their morning stroll

Speaking of cats being dicks. I read somewhere that when your cat is looking at you lovingly, it's actually instinctively just sizing you up
Now I mean mug my cat every time it looks at me  >:(

I had a loon come up beside me at Glimpse lake once- he swam under me while I was in a belly boat landing a fish. There was some brown "logs" floating behind me after that as they're pretty scary when they swim. Anyhow, he came up just a few feet from me. I gave him a gentle whack with my rod. He was more than a little upset and gave me the red stinkeye and his feathers on his head looked like an Elvis do.
There was no sign of ducklings or momma at the lake after that. I saw one of the loons swallow a fish yesterday while I was out in the boat. Looked like a snake swallowing a small rodent.
