Title: Newbie Question: fishing in Cap mouth
Post by: Nikonian on July 08, 2004, 02:50:24 PM
Hello all,

I'm new to Salmon fishing so hopefully those questions won't bore you guys. :-[

I started salmon fishing last year and got one coho in Vedder ( I promised the 1st salmon will be catch-and-release  ;) ) -- and since then no more fishing get caught.  At that time I was using fish roe drifting along the river.

For less commute, I started fishing in cap mouth this year and hopefully get some cohos.... but hooked nothing so far.  I was using silvery spoon on a baitcasting reel/rod.

Questions:

1. As I haven't hooked anything with lures, can I know how different the bite you can feel? ( I know it's tough to answer :-[)

2. As a novice, will using fish roe increasing the chance of hooking in cap mouth?  Or any lures be suggested?

Thanks and hope to see you guys there :)

If you are fishing the mouth of the Capilano (salt water) use 2 1/2" buzz bombs, spinners such as Blue Fox and metrics and spoons (Krocodiles).  Save the roe for fishing the river.

Thanks Assassin.  For retrieval speed, should it be fast enough to keep on the water surface or somewhere near the bottom ( retrieve --> stop --> retrieve? )?

Thanks all!

we talked a bit about the mouth on this thread

maybe try starting with something cheap like a colorado blade and split shot, retreive slowly but fast enough to keep it off the bottom.Or buy some more costly blue fox spinners in neon green or yellow #3 or #4s I think. Also the silvery spoon you mentioned like maybe a Gibbs Ultra lure siver would work well also.
Or buy some of Rodneys wicked spoons and spinners-Lures of mass  attraction!

bluefox's r swett not on top  just 1/2 way down and through the fish   I  had great success with blue color. I  hope you have a good time there  and maybe hook a chromer   m and eat it too   ... make sure it's Hatchery    though

I tend to switch it up a lot.  If one things not working I'll switch to another until bang! fish on.  I usually use homemade spinners, bluefox spinners, buzz bombs, and crocodile spoons.
