Title: Trolling for sockeye?

First time looking for sockeye later this week.  Is trolling the non-tidal Fraser for sockeye worthwhile?  Lots of talk of bar fishing here, but I prefer to fish from my boat.

I'm interested to know as well.  It works at the mouth, but when do they really start to get lock jaw?  I'm not into bottom bouncing, but if I could troll with traditional saltwater set ups I would be all over it in the lower Fraser.

The water is to murky for that to work Id guess.

Damien I thinks it more about visibility than lock jaw. Once the water clears up they can be targeted ie. Osoyoos and The Babine Lake fisheries. Also they are often caught in the Vedder not flossing.

Right, but from what I have heard, when they are in the main river, clear or not, they ain't bitin.  It would be nice to be able to troll mid-river/tidal with at least a chance at getting bites.  Basically using saltwater tactics, flasher and small hootchie etc...

What about back trolling the plugs like they do on Skeena and Kitimat rivers. Any body tried it here?

If you want to use saltwater gear, why don't you just fish the chuck?

Its all about visibility in the water, as mentioned above. They will bite.

1) I'm really busy with work and family and would like to put my boat in close to where I live (Langley)
2) I have a small rig, 14' Tinny with a 15hp Merc not really suited to the chuck for the most part

If I time the tides and pay attention to the weather and spend an hour travelling to get my boat in the water I COULD fish the mouth or West Van.  But it just doesn't work for me in general.

You need to go past Gary point park (4th marker in from the lighthouse) fish south of the red Channel markers in 30' of water. Put one rigger at 25',  and bounce the bottom or real close to the bottom on the other side. Use dummies on the ball and clip you rod 4' above that. It works
