Title: Crab bait
Post by: Ambassador on May 09, 2014, 03:27:34 PM
Been out crabbing a few times with different bait and varying levels of success. Sometimes a fair haul of crabs, sometimes a trap full of Starfish and Sea Cucumbers. I've pretty much just used chicken ends and salmon guts and heads. Someone mentioned recently that seals like chicken and will rip traps apart to get to it. Don't want that!

What are you guys having luck with around here?

Sometimes I take my kids crabbing from the dock. The last time we went out I thought I must have had a full trap because of the weight. When it got close to the dock on the pull back in the trap began to pull back and it was at this point I realized I had a seal on the other end trying to take the chicken leg that was zap strapped to the trap.

Guys I know use "wet" dog food inside a plastic container with some holes in it. I saw them for sale at Wal Mart for about 5$. The holes allow it seep out a bit. They usually use it as a secondary bait and include something else in the bait box, such as chicken etc

The most attractive bait for crabs is to find some live mussels still on the shell, approx,,, 6 pcs crush them a bit , buy a small can of sardine with oil , puncture It into 5 small hole using a small diameter nail ,the holes will allow the fishy scent to seep out gradually , then put the crushed mussels and sardine can on a mesh plastic and form it as a sack, tie it and there is your deadly crab bait, good luck out there,,, cheers

I think the the best bait are any fish with strong smell and lots of oil like herring, mackerel and sardine.
However, they also tend to attract seals, definitely more so than chicken.
