Title: Wondering what these people were doing....

I was fishing last week and I saw a truck with several people in the back. They would drive along the tree side all the way from the campsite down to Browne. They would come off the truck and start to slash the branches along the river.

Not that I am complaining because it looks like they are opening more spots.

I wonder if they were looking for beavers. That area has quite a few and they do alot of damage.
Or they could also be removing invasive plants.

They are surveying water/substrate levels to determine potential future (this summer) gravel extractions.  These gravel extractions on the Vedder are here to stay because politically they are deemed necessary for downstream flood protection ... and is another reason the new habitat created in the lower river for late run salmonids is so well timed and crucial.

They actually has machete cutting branches. I did not see them down at water level.

Were they adding any flagging tape? I have noticed fresh orange tape all over the place on the lower, more so than ever. I guessed it might have to do with possible gravel removal sites, but its everywhere.

I would guess they are slashing and killing invasive plant species! On the capilano river they do this every year for the Giant Hogweed? Highly dangerous plant that can cause serious rashes, even blindness, when touched. They are always to in full cover gear like that! The plant really thrives on river banks

They have multiple transect sites in the lower river, hence all the tape.  Trust me, this has nothing to do with beavers or invasive weeds ;D

looks like tape just to the left of the lower figure in the dark clothing. I have noticed tape in many places on the lower river and the canal

There was a guy down at the cannel with a chainsaw cutting branches down. Last week we thought was a bit strange.

That truck looks familiar. If it's the same guy we talked too, they are surveying the gravel...

This year , 2014 they are raising the dykes. I saw them on the vedder canal also. I know that 2013 they are spent time surveying and engineering the dykes on the Fraser also in preparation for raising them. But Dave is probably right, they are surveying in this picture for gravel removal in the summer.
