It's been at least five or more years that I've seen big carp jumping (with loud explosive sounding splashes) at Deer Lake.
The last time I saw a carp swimming at Deer Lake was probably about four years ago.
Does anyone have an idea to the disappearance of the carp? From the last couple of years, I did noticed an increase presence of new fishermen targeting carp, especially near the beach playground side.
Deer Lake doesn't feel like the lake which I've grown up with without the presence of carp!

I have only ever noticed them locally on hot and sunny days. I have seen a couple jump on spring mornings at Lafarge though. I should really think about targeting those bloody fish, they can be very difficult to catch, fight like hell and are pretty cool looking as well :)

I was there June or early July and heard the carp splashing around. didn't know carp where there until I read up on deer lake and realized no way that was a trout or bass.

I constantly see big ones jumping in the evening. Especially on the far side by the pads off one of the beaches I fish across from the main playground.

here is a trick for carp.
Go to the same spot at the same time of day every day for 2 weeks.
put corn in that spot of the water at the same time
and after 2 weeks the fish will be used to where and when. so if u wanted to sight see or fish for em that is a way to bring them in to have a look

depositing any substance in the water, is
prohibited."

x2, I saw some rolling over the surface this spring.

I used to do that to check em out like ducks at the park when i was a kid.
I didn't know you couldent fish for them like that. it was just and idea late at night before bed.
i've had 50 pounders float by doing that back in the day

Interestingly in Europe it ( chumming) is a big business as it is allowed everywhere ,but then there are local fishing societies that take care of fish.

But considering that carp are an unwanted, introduced species, it is hard to get too upset with people using questionable methods of catching them. Heck, Fisheries even spent our good money draining an entire lake just to kill one poor northern snakehead. But, it's okay for an oil company with a poor environmental track record to run a pipe line along the finest remaining steelhead river in the world.

Good point although carp are highly saught after by the Europeans. They are an invasive species but I hear they are good sport fishing too.

Correct........In the UK its generally known as "Ground baiting" and they do it with just about every type of Bran, bread, tinned. cooked, and raw deli meats and vegetables. One match fisherman alone may toss out kilo's of it in one session to attract fish into the "swim" and its perfectly legal. The Brits seem to have carp fishing down to a science, anyone thinking about getting into it can do no better than to visit one of their Carp forums where you'll learn about the many different hook and baiting rigs and techniques.
You'll also learn a whole new vocabulary...:)

Carp fishing has come a long way during my lifetime (I'm 66) as kids we'd use worms, bread dough, and on occasions small par boiled new potato's, Floating crust was another popular method..
Carp are like these swimming vacuum cleaners and will suck it all up. In recent years controversy has grown around the use of corn and whether carp can digest it.......... not going there :)
We'd sit out in all weathers under an umbrella, but nowadays they have Bivvies small tent like covers complete with loungers and these adjustable square tubed aluminum structures that you can build to any combination of multiple rod holders/seats/tackle drawers which have wheels and handles and look like garden wheel barrows...Where'as we used to carry everything for miles slung over our shoulders. they simply wheel it all to the river bank...its a whole new ball game these days.

One thing that has caught on over the past few decades (apart from electronic bite detectors) are bait boats, yes they're quiet electric powered radio controlled boats that deliver ground bait (chum) to a specific area of the lake and dump it overboard...
They're heavily into boilies and baits that float on hair rigs just off the bottom .....bait scents have also become very big business within Carp angling circles..
