Friend picked me up at 2:30 am, got a bite to eat in Abby and we we decided to check out this run that I have never fished while it was still dark. Put on the waders, headlamps and grabbed the bear spray and walked into the forest and down to the river. The run didn't look as promising as I expected so we moved on to the stretch I originally planned to fish. Got the the big run just before first light and started fishing when we could see. Threw jigs, different colour prawns, various colours of roe and blades, nothing, only one fish jumped. Moved to the second run, nothing, third and fourth nothing. By the fourth spot the sun was already starting to peak out. I knew that once it would come out it would pretty much be game over. We sat in the car and were debating on moving down a little ways or going up river a little bit, decided to go up. Got to the run with 2 guys fishing it, only one hookup to show. We got our gear and set up just above the people that were fishing the tail end of the run. I was changing from a jig to a prawn with wool combo as the water was a little bit fast for jigs. As I was tying up I hear "fish on!" I look over and my friend has a fish on a roe bag first cast, stayed deep so I knew it was a chinook, proceed to tail it and bonk it for him.

I wouldn't hear the end of it for the next 10 min while I bled the fish and got my combo ready. Finally I start fishing, 3rd cast float down, big fish. I could feel it strap down to the bottom and the massive head shakes. It was a little down river from me as it flashed under the surface, looked to be 12-15 pounds. Another minute goes by and it goes for one deep dive and the hook pops out of its top lip. I was pretty mad but kept going. Proceeded to hook and land 6 of 8 sockeye in half an hour, one was snagged the rest were on the tongue. Little procure shrimp did the trick. Kept going through sockeye that I tangled with someone else while fighting a fish and just proceeded to drag it in expecting a sockeye as it rolled as soon as I hooked it. We untangled and I turned the fish out of the current and into the calmer water. Saw dots on its back and my buddy yells "Spring!" I knew my leader was all scratched up from the last few fish so I was expecting to lose this one too. Got it in the shallows and it slipped out of my friends hand but got its tail on the next grab. Bonked it and we were done for the day.

Was a good outing with a very good friend, got a lot of confidence in procured prawns, hopefully get back at it soon.
Drove from Chilliwack to Squamish then back to Burnaby after, river was high, visibility was poor and not too many people out. 8 cars at Furry Creek and a few along the Squamish, drove all the way there and did not even cast, fish are there just nothing like it will be in a week or two.

Enjoy.

Thanks for the report. Always a pleasure to read about your outings.

Nice report, fish are getting a little tanned on the Vedder.
Can't believe you drove from Chilliwack to Squamish.
Talk about enthusiasm.

Two teens with a car and a day to spend, why not? Ahahaha
As for the fish, mine was chrome with a little tint but the last pic was taken after it was in a bag for 2 hours and had a bunch of grass and leaves on it, friends fish had a little red showing. Here's a better pic with the fish washed off (sorry about the sink shot)-

I hear the water in the lower Mamquam is clear enough and pinks are being caught there. The Squamish and Cheakamus are still running fairly high and visibility is poor.
