Title: Casting jigs with a fly fishing rod
Post by: alhambra on June 24, 2013, 09:30:07 PM
If you were to put a spinning reel on a fly fishing rod, what would be the max weight of a jig you can cast on with a 6wt rod?

fly rod's guide isnt designed for mono line.

If you constantly use mono line  on fly rod , line will be grooved into guide and dmg your line

eventually.  ;D

There are bunch of spinning rod out there under 100 dollars

Rule of thumb for rodbuilders who use fly blanks for ultralight spinning rods is maximum line_weight / 16.
A 6wt would be roughly 3/8 oz.
A fast action fly rod will feel like mush compared to almost any spinning rod. Distance will be limited.

Absolutely,it's called nymph/indicator fishing..........flyline with a leader, indicator(bobber),split shot or jigs. It's very popular south of the border, some say more productive than swinging flies. It's killer with trout beads too

I was casting jigs on my fly rod last year for bullies the way you would cast a fly.
It's a pretty major chuck and duck, but it works. Just one false cast and one heck of a long shoot.

Worked great for getting down deep along structure when fish wouldn't come up.
No indicator or anything, just high sticking the jig or at times even swinging it.
I still do it quite often when I'm out fly fishing and nothing else is working.

I use a 6 weight fly rod with spinning reel and you can throw any sized jigs but my preference is 1/8oz-1/4-oz.  Heaviest weight I have chucked with it is 1oz when barfishing.

As Yakideath said some damage can occur.  For me it's not the line but the tip guide that gets damaged.

My 6 weight fly rod also has a small butt on it which helps immensely with a spinning reel attached..  My 7 weight does not and results in sore hands and fingers if spincasting all day.

a fair number of guys use switch rods for CP fishing with and don't have any problem with the guides developing groves. They are basically very hard though over several years even a fly line can burnish guides and develop cutting edges.

chuck n duck works great...........almost like pinning with a fly rod, till the purists show up and you scramble to hide the indicator(bobber) and ditch the split shot ;D
