Title: 2013 Lower Mainland/Fraser Valley rainbow trout stocking information

2013's Lower Mainland/Fraser Valley catchable rainbow trout stocking starts today, March 21st. The Fraser Valley Trout Hatchery, operated by the Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC (http://www.fishingwithrod.com/advertiser/gofishbc/index.html), is responsible for stockings of these fish between March and June, September and November, so fishing is expected to be excellent during these months. These angling opportunities are fantastic for families, youth and entry-level anglers due to high catch success rate.

As usual, we will once again be providing regular stocking reports to keep you updated so you can plan your next weekend fishing trip better. Lower Mainland/Fraser Valley lake stocking reports will be available in this thread as well as on this page (http://www.fishingwithrod.com/fishing_report/stocking_2.html).

WHERE TO FISH?

Here are some of the lakes in Region Two that are stocked with rainbow trout.

I like that the daily limit has been reduced. Means it will hopefully get fished out a little slower. I enjoy taking my daughters over there to catch and release a few trout.

BTW. That's a really cool pic Rodney.

Lowering the limit is excellent news indeed. It means the freezer packers have to make more trips back and forth to get their fill.

Glad to see the limit lowered to two!!! This fishery is meant for families, young and people looking to enjoy some fishing locally, not a daily meat source.  Great decision!

They stock it most years, but not as heavily as the other urban lakes.
Last year they put 1600 in, in early spring, but that was it for the year.

Title: Re: 2013 Lower Mainland/Fraser Valley rainbow trout stocking information
Post by: GoFishBC on March 28, 2013, 11:17:20 AM
To answer the question regarding the stocking of Deer and Hicks lakes.  With consultation with Ministry staff it was approved to switch the stocking of Deer and Hicks lake from Taylor 3N Coastal Cutthroat to FV3N Rainbow Trout as Catchables.  This switch was initiated to hopefully create a more successful family fishery at all times of the year.  This will also help to free up container space and water demands at the Trout Hatchery making our program run more efficiently.  Deer Lake will be stocked with 1000 FV3N catchables and Hicks lake with 1500 FV3N catchables each spring.

Hope everyone has a fun Easter Weekend, the weather is going to be awesome!!  :) :D If you are going fishing remember your NEW LICENCES as of April 1st. ;)

Cheers!!

One more question.  Do you guys stock Francis (Harrison) via road or air?

Ive never really float fished at all, and I am hoping this will be a good warm up and intro for Steelies this year!

The local trout can be a lot of fun on a ul setup. Last year I had my best day fishing in my life on a local lake with a small float, and krill

these are worn out brood stock - they dump them in local lakes otherwise they'd dump them in the dumper.

Out of Mill I got 4 or 5 of those guys after I got my belly boat. So January/February sometime. Green Timbers was better for broods though, I think I got 40-50 in October/November over 3 or 4 days. They arent pretty, you dont want to eat em, but in a little pond like that its a not bad way to spend 30 cents in gas and enjoy a morning.

Could not agree more, I have spent many happy hours trout/fly fishing locally, especially not having to burn $80 bucks or more in fuel to do so. I greatly appreciate the efforts of the frazer valley trout hatchery's staff in providing the opportunity to have good fun in close proximity. For many people, travelling to the interior frequently is not doable, time wise or financially, with gas prices hovering around $ 1.40/ltr.

Hi Shawn, the hole punched gill plates are part of the mark and recapture study done by GoFishBC to determine angling participation at these urban lakes.

Thanks for the info Rodney. Haven't those lakes already got more than their fair share??

I think a major reason these lakes get so many is because they can support it. Not that they are highly productive or anything, but the fishing pressure is high enough. Most of the coastal lakes are not the greatest for productivity, and you wouldn't want to put too many trout into any one lake.

Its also a strategy to get people into fishing. Not everyone is willing to start fishing when it means driving an hour+, especially if you dont have a car. More people fishing, especially newcomers, means more money for the programs that do these stockings(because license fees pay for this stuff), which in turns means more stockings.
