Title: Living in Sardis?
Post by: gw105 on January 23, 2013, 09:07:38 PM
We are currently thinking about moving to the Sardis area from Abbotsford, and I'm wondering if anyone on the forums has any good info or advice about the area?  I have heard that crime is a concern in Chilliwack, but I'm not sure how true that is.  The cost of living seems somewhat lower in the area than other areas in the Fraser Valley.  Haven't heard to much about the schools.  We have one in elementary and one in middle school.  Of course one big benefit would be being closer to the Vedder and more fishing opportunities :)   Any info would be greatly appreciated, and if I'm posting in the wrong area, I apologize in advance!   Thanks!

are you looking to buy or rent a place. There are some really nice homes off peach road being put in. I know the builder personally and he does good work, and my brothers just bought one and there is two more going up right beside it. they start at 394 and up and are very nice and right beside the river!

Looking to buy, but not new.  Have been looking at a few places , just not terribly familiar with the area.

I moved from Mission to Sardis, and requested my realtor to get me a home around Keith Wilson Road which must have a bedroom on the main floor for my aged mother who lives with us. Most homes do not have a bedroom on the main. She found a town house in McLaren for me which had what I wanted. The best thing is that is is just 4 minutes and you are on the dyke and into the Peach Rd. runs.

I cannot say how happy I am living in Sardis. I can fish anytime I want and also walk or cycle on the dyke as and when I want. Its ideal for me and my needs. A bonus is that we have the 4th best water in the world too.

The schools are all excellent. I brought 3 kids through the system, one graduated in 2012 from GW Graham. They all have excellent sports and music programs.
Shopping is excellent as well with several near new neighbourhood centres in Sardis. You would be minutes from the Chilliwack/Vedder system, very close to fantastic fishing bars on the Fraser, Cultus Lake is in your backyard, fantastic hiking and biking trails, and the list goes on. This is god's country. Welcome.  :)

Not a good Idea. My cars been broken it, and my Rod and reel have been stolen twice. Just the other day Chris Gadsdens truck got stolen. Its a big risk living out here, good luck.

Maybe he should move to Surrey where they have had 4 murders in the last week. Every place has crime. Dont let things like what he said detour you. I dont live in Sardis but if you fall in love with it before moving take a chance. Life is too short to not take chances.

Breaking news!

Sardis property value soars overnight due to a sudden spike of interest from the recreational fishing community... :o

Wow thanks everyone for the overwhelming responses!!  Must admit I got a chuckle from some of the posts... seems to me like Sardis is a love it or hate it place lol.

I have spent some time in the area, and I must agree I do like the small town feel.  Seems like not many communities these days are without property crime.  I must admit I get a much better feeling in the Sardis area than Chilliwack north of the highway.

Would be great to get some fishing in during the week after work as opposed to weekends.... even though there's no fish in the river and my car will be broken into LOL.  ;D

Sardis use to have the dubious distinction of most church's per capita. Thus the backlash from Beelzebub with crime and car thefts to even the playing field.

I was looking at a couple places online, but they are very close to the large power transmission lines.  I'm sure it's safe,  but thought is in the back of my mind.   :o :o

There are nice area's on the north side too! I have no regrets 6 years and counting.
I look forward to being one of the "old fella's" that I fish alongside several times a month.

I have lived in chilliwack /sardis, since i was five years old. I have never had a problem with crime until last year, my car door lock was punched out in the lickman rd parking lot. Thus being said i think a lot has to do with timing, when being the target of a crime. Sure the crime rate has become worse, but for me to have one problem in in 33years of living in the area is not bad. Personally i would say the quality of schools and areas to live in are far better on the sardis side of the highway, although i am sure a good local realtor will be more than happy to help you with that kind of information. Rosedale, Fairfield, Promontory, Greendale, Yarrow are also great options, and all very close to some fantastic fishing.

Hey Big Fisher,do you think maybe the break ins are targeted? Thieves who wait and watch for anglers who park along the river, knowing they wont be back to the viehicle for awhile? I dont count that as the town of Sardis having a big crime problem. I haved lived in the same house for 10 yrs and none of my nieghbors have ever been broken into. Nor do i know anyone in my circle of friends and aqaintances who live in other parts of Sardis to have suffered a break in. I suggest you stop parking beside the river and which is obviously a crime area. ::) In no way does this reflect upon the nice people we have living here in Sardis. ;D ps, I grew up in Surrey, and haved lived in many different parts of this country due to my work.Hands down,Sardis is where i will stay. Proud to be raising my son in this great town. ;)

I just live down the street from these houses.  The 2 minute walk to the river is way to long and I would not recommend it.  On the serious side, it definitely has a small town feel.  The Chilliwack side does have a higher crime rate then the Sardis side.  I do not think you will regret it.  The neighborhood I live in is excellent, with the kids being safe to play around the neighborhood.  Have 2 in elementary school with the third staring next year.

I live just off of South Sumas and Tyson for the past 8 1/2 years.  Great neighbourhood with quality schools.  I am a Mortgage Broker and have awesome realtor contacts if anyone is looking to buy in Chilliwack/Sardis area.  Oh yes, the smell from the farms, orchards, mills and burning only lasts 11 of the 12 months of the year!!!  Other than that life is great in the country.

Oh that terrible manure smell from the farm!!! I usually held my breath when driving through the farm stretch and hit the rotten air pocket. Not sure how any one can stay around the house to smell it for more than 10 minutes. Do you guys smell it in the area around Peach Rd? It is probably better air to live up the hill like those lovely houses on the hills around the Crossing bridge. How much those cost?

Cow manure is like chicken soup for the soul... Builds character.
Pig cupcakes on the other hand...

That's not manure, its rotting Brussel sprouts.  For some reason farmers left a lot in the fields, rather than harvest them.

I smelt that foul air usually early Spring when the farms spread manures to the fields. It usually is west of Lickman. Get used to it? Wow.  ;D
Probably need to spray lot of air freshener around the house to get rid of the smell. I am happy to hear that Peach Rd area is free of those smell. It is nice area to retire to some day.

If you are into fishing, this is the best place to live in. Also, in the summer time you can get the sweetest corn in BC , maybe even anywhere in the world. I love Sardis?

I have also thought that Peach Road area would be a nice area to retire to.
Because it's so close to the river and all, has Sardis area ever been flooded?

No , it's above the high water mark . Greendale is a different story though as it's the lowest lying area .
