So today I saw something I have never seen before. Was fishing a run(wound up landing a couple nice springs) and at the bottom tailout of the run a fisher came in, hammered a bar rod holder into the ground, and proceeded to bar fish. I thought maybe this would happen in the canal but I was between the Train bridge and Lickman. Anyone seen this before? Thoughts?

Yeah I have seen it done a few times, and it's pretty effective if you don't mind everyone getting upset with you. I have never done it personally, but might try it one day, it may not be the norm in a river where drift fishing is the stand by, but it's better then bottom bouncing and snagging fish, and some days you just don't have the energy to be casting continuously.

I have done it but you have to be selective in your spots just dont get in between drifters keep to your self . I have been very sucsesfull with it I would rather see more people do that than bottom bounce it used to be a very standard way of fishing .

I've seen done near Keith Wilson Bridge. Perhaps that is the solution to the snagging there

Saw a guy doing it on the Chehalis years ago and had it in the back of my mind since. This is the first time I have seen it brought up. I think setup in a nice backeddie with a gravel bottom could be productive as well.

Theres an older fellow who bar fishes below KWB during steelhead season regularly, and I have witnessed him catching fish.

I've seen a few older gentlemen doing this before too and I have zero problem with it. I just simply asked if I could move down river of them and they didn't mind. I talked to them for a while and the one guy explained that his arthritis made constant casting difficult, so this was a way for him to still enjoy fishing. Seemed like they were having a good time to me, and it is just as ethical to fish this way as it is to float fish.

X2. Sometimes you just want to chillax beside the river and talk to your buddy.

Rather drift around a bar rig than drift with a ripper 8)

I have tried a smaller bar setup than used on the fraser in selective spots and it works just as well on the vedder as on any other river.
Be smart and dont plop your line inbetween others and things will work out. Just prepare for some fleck becuase there is always the one guy who knows everything out there and he will chew on your ear a bit.
I have landed one jack spring this way and quite a few trout, no big springs or steelies yet. There is always time to tune up the set up though.
I have also witnessed an older gent catch quite a few steelhead while i was spinner chucking down stream from him.
It is relaxing for some because casting all day for some is very painful at the end of the day.
I admire his style on the river and he is very polite.

Think I'm going to give it a shot under KWB this weekend ;)
