Title: Chilliwack River, September 15th & 16th 2012
Post by: CohoJake on September 16, 2012, 08:32:05 PM
Saturday morning, my Dad and I started at the lower river chucking roe.  I lost two fish in the 4-5 lb range, I think spring jacks, before 8:30.  Broke of them broke my 8lb Stren leader - I was not happy.  The bite died off but there were lots of fish rolling and splashing throughout the morning, including lots of coho in the slack water.

Saturday afternoon, we decided to head upriver.  I hooked a large but surprisingly unfresh (chrome with white fungus on tail and dorsal fin) spring that ran downstream and broke off.  Eventually we had two nice springs on the beach.  A tiny dab of pink wool was the trick.  The fish were hooked in a fast and choppy center channel (nearly white water).  The fish turned out to both be males with white flesh (10 lbs and 13 lbs).

Sunday morning, we headed back to where I lost the fish on roe the day before.  By 6:30 am, I had this spring on the beach:

She was 13 pounds with marble flesh.  No action at all after that on the lower river, and we saw no coho like the day before, so we went upstream and again pink wool in the fastest, deepest water was the key.  We hooked 3 more springs before my dad landed an 11 lb buck.  It turned out to be marble as well.

September 16 and we each have 2 springs on our licenses - not a bad start!

Fished this afternoon mid river and landed a very fresh doe white spring around 16 to 17 lbs. Also, hooked a few other fish, including several coho but lost them before getting them on the beach. Very small presentations of wool or a bead on a size 4 or 6 hook and 6lb or 8lb leader was required for the fish to show any interest. Overall quite slow but the weather was great. Need some rain!

Thanks for the report. Could only get into several jacks and a few bull trout on Saturday. Lots rolling around appeared to be jacks - didn't see any of the bigger boys rolling around, though. Mind you, I was just scouting out the river and teaching a buddy how to fish so we didn't get underway untill well after first light.

Sunday was horrible i have never seen the water so low. Some risers and jumpers in lower at first like but no takes. Saw some two fish taken in upper in faster waters like you said. Just waiting for that big rain now the river should just be stacked.

There definitely seemed to be less fish in the lower river on Sunday than on Saturday, but they had to go somewhere.  My guess is up.

Lots of movement on Sunday mid river late afternoon, saw a few monsters launching them selves right out of the water...was into a couple jacks but sent them back to the river, was a beautiful day, no hoes taken
