My friend was telling me that I can use a switch rod as my centrepin rod...any opinions on that?
-
Yep, I put my CP on my switch all the time. It casts great and it is even better when a fish is on. Also, the extra length helps to keep your line off the water for a better drift. I have tried my CP on my spey rod but that doesn't work quite as well. It is hard to describe but the CP spins too fast on a spey rod.

So if I had a Sage 2106lb CP rod and wanted to use it as a switch rod as well is there any way to determine what window of fly line grains I could use on it?
-
Carich - it doesnt quite work that way but i like the way you think ;)
i would think a 2 power would be close to a 6/7wt spey rod but it wont cast the same because it is tied as a drift rod.

Other thing you have to watch out for when using a switch rod as a center pin. Is that the snake guides on the switch rod will wear out sooner from the monafilament line.

Yes, works great.

I have been using 8 wt switch rod for fly and gear fishing for several years now. I have used it as a gear rod for all type of salmon. It's a riot when you are into a chinook. ;D

I wouldn't worry about the guides wearing out unless you are doing a ton of fishing and playing some real brutes. I had a three piece sage switch from way back bought from Berry's and it gave me 12 wonderful years out of it before it blew up when a trunk was closed on it. The switch rods are nice and light and are a great way to fish, tight lines WS.

Update.
I did it with the help of M&Y and it casts fine. Better with the first line tested which was a scandi short versatip. But as I'm waiting on my new spey rod to arrive so I picked up the Reel and matching line which is a Unispey 7/8 - 540g. Its a bit heavy for it but it still casts fine. Heading down to the vedder to play with it tonight.
In future I'll probably buy a separate Scandi short versatip head just for it.
