The Calcutta is a smoother reel and the Abu is simpler and looks easier to repair/ clean.  The Records cast quite well, haven't tried a brand new Calcutta.  Check out the Daiwa Luna 253, that probably will be my next levelwind for coho and steelhead, they feel like a better reel than the B-series Calcutta and are definitely smoother than the Record.

What sizes of reels are you comparing?

What will be your target species ?

there are a lot of variables you could also consider some of the low profile reels as well.

The Record RCN50 only carries about 110yds of 12lbs if I remember correct.  Nevertheless, and its landed plenty of coho and steelhead on small to medium sized flows.  As far as I'm concerned, once a fish gets more than 75yds of line on you in a river about the size of the Vedder, its game over anyways.

Shimano for me.  You may also want to check out the Curado 300 series.  caught many springs, coho and steelhead on it.

Take a look at the luna 253.  I just got one and I love it. Very smooth action you won't be disappointed.

Luna: 300.00    Calcutta 400: about the same. Record 60: About half that.  Parts: Can be a challenge with Daiwa and Shimano. Better luck with Abu.

If you are out there 200+ days a year, then get the Daiwa or the Shimano. If less, then go with the Record.

I have both abu 6500 cs-pro (euro edition) and Shimano Calcutta 400b they are both great. I would say that the Calcutta is a bit smoother better choice for the vedder.

Also consider a low profile reel like a Shimano Curado as their lower centre of gravity makes them balance so much better on a rod, making it more comfortable and easier to use. For coho and steelhead, I use a Curado 201E7 loaded with 12lb mainline and if you targeting springs a Curado 300 loaded with 15lbs mainline would be a good choice for a river like Vedder.
