Title: Bottom bouncing association.
Post by: Driller on October 14, 2011, 08:34:59 PM
It was another pleasant summer filled with so many memories of awesome bottom bouncing.  I even tried bottom bouncing up at roche lake.  It was hard to drive the boat in the perfect circle, plus after about 5 minutes I would get about 15 pounds of weeds that I would need the net to lift out of the water don't ya know. There are fly fishing clubs, river clean up clubs, and stuff like that I was wondering if there are any bottom bouncing clubs.  We could all get together and try to find out what length leader works best, and what colour wool the salmons like best and other secrets.  I know for me I found that the salmon really liked a 4 oz. Betty, with a 16.5 ft leader and a 4 ot gamagatzu tied with green/ chartreuse yarn.

I'll sign up, but I think we need to create awareness.  I'm thinking maybe some membership cards, and perhaps black hoodies.  Also a camo hat with the Bottom Bouncing Explorer's Association of Kingfisher's logo: "I'm a B.B.E.A.K!"

Do you think my sturgeon set up would be too big for use and would it hinder my acceptance into B.B.E.A.K. ?    ::)

B.B.E.A.K. report. Oct 15, 2011

4AM alarm goes off, slam on my simms waders, pound down a NOS energy drink and I'm on the road. Decide to try my luck today bouncing for squirrels. First cast snag into a cedar. Second cast line gets fouled up around a gnarled stump. Cut the line and re-rig up. Saw 2 squirrels running around on tree branches high above. I almost got a bite when I hurled a perfect cast with my 5 oz betty and 5/O treble hook wrapped in pencil lead vertically into the thick forrest canopy. Rainbow wool was my weapon of choice today, but I dipped it in fish oil just to be safe. The rig glanced a tree and the hook bounced excellently. I just grazed the tail of one of the squirrels. Spent the next 3 hours trying to get my gear out of the branches. Pounded back another NOS energy drink and hit the bricks.

Next time I'll try chartreuse with some sparklies in it instead of rainbow. Fish oil seemed to be effective.

No matter what you do, be sure to bring a lawnchair and umbrella, standing up gets tiring and you don't want to lose the best 2 square feet of fishing space on the whole river because you are retying a new leader.

The tacklebox is a must, you need to carry your gear to the river in something, and your hoody doesn't have enough pockets and vests are too outdated. Good thing you're bringing your camo hat, fish get spooked when they see hair.

A landing net is needed also, as it's hard dragging fish onto the sandy beach and fish are near impossible to tail in 2 feet of water.

That being said make sure you wear gloves for when you have to pick the fish up, they are slippery, also reeling can be tough and you don't want to develop callouses.

Don't forget a fish bonker, because how else are you gonna kill the fish!

Last but not least, bring garbage. Tim hortons coffee cups work well, but make sure you seperate the sleeve from the cup and the lid so that you can make more of a mess. Regardless of if you use bait or not, bring about a half dozen plastic tubs and leave them all over the place. If your not a coffee drinker, just bring a 6 pack and throw the cans everywhere. If you have any balls of 150# mono then no doubt bring it to the river. The riverbank, the path to the fishing spot, as well as the parking lot and surrounding bushes are fair game places to throw it.
Regardless if you smoke or not, heck bring cigarettes. The butts are perfect for throwing in the river and the boxes are among the most
important items to throw around. And last but not least, plastic bags. At minumum you should leave at least a half dozen, and they go perfect in the shallows just out from where you were standing. Fish love hiding under garbage.

Better yet, if the lawn chair umbrella breaks, throw it directly into the river. And if you get a flat tire sometime during the day ...yup, in it goes!

Naturally, the jacket would be camo...

I would like something like a a holster they use in the army for a bunch of grenades on the front of the vest to hang up all my bouncing betties. I have about 30 different styles of betty, varying in weight, rubber outside or not, and color. I prefer the yellow bouncing betties myself.

Anyone have a betty preference? I seem to hook the most animals when I use the yellow weights.
Title: Re: Bottom bouncing association.

Yellow weights are considered to be unethical. If you're a self respecting bottom bouncer, chartreuse is the cats's meow.

A guy next to us at the Stave got fouled up and pulled in a three way swivel dual 3oz betty settup, would love to meet the evil mastermind who dreamed that rig up. Sod chucking guts lets just chuck the nuts at them.

I'm going to tie 3 betties to a threeway swivel and just fire that directly into the current. No rod nothin'

They should bite that right? Maybe I should use different color betties..

Bottom bouncing for squirrels? How about Bar fishing for back labs?
Today saw a dog get hooked today at dump bar in Richmond (NOT EVEN JOKING EITHER).

The poor guy fishing kept being harassed by this pack of about 10 dogs who the owner didn't even care about.
Finally after retying his bait several times after his rod being knocked over by the dogs the dogs decided to try some roe.
Obviously the dog liked it and then ate the hook!
He was hooked in the mouth for about 2 minutes (inside of mouth, not even foul hooked ;)
The owner didnt give a cupcakes. and the poor fisherman had to pull the hook out risking his own hand.

Sad but true.

I hoped he had a canine conservation surcharge on his licence.

He didnt drag the dog up onto the bank and over-handle him before releasing him did he? that would be just plain ignorance given the catch and release mortalities for dogs

Heard they're going to put more gravel bars in the Lower Fraser as part of the government's Green Initiative to cut down gas emissions. Lower Mainland residents don't have to drive all the way to the valley to bottom bounce for sockeyes. And speaking of sockeyes, the daily limit will be increased to 4
