Looking to take an afternoon off this week and try for some big boys at the Stave.
-
Im going too hope some good news ;D
-
drove threw there on sunday. nothing showing yet
-
btw, do chum taste good? and I have heard that green/purple lures, jigs, works very good catching chum, is that true?
-
Pink/Purple Bent Rod Jigs with brass head did the trick for me last year, caught some real fresh chum with them.
I normally just smoke them, but my neighbor makes great fish cakes with them
-
if not mistaken was it not closed for chum salmon last year.
-
not close for the year. close for part of the season. You gotta read the closures very carefully.
-
I was there on the weekend. There were only the odd ones in there. They will start to show in greater numbers over the next few weeks.
-
I am heading out there Friday hopefully. I will let you know what I see. Last year was closed, but it is open again now. No ideawhat they are expecting fro CHUM returns this year. Has anyone heard?

No, but keep your eyes out for in season changes as there could be a change coming if the chum do not.
-
Makes sense. Are they not arriving in other systems as well?
-
They are, it's early for any decent numbers yet, wait a week or two.
-
Fished it on saturday, caught 2 in just over an hour while i was trying to find a coho. They are definately starting to show up... give it a week or so.
-
im soooo pumped for this years chum run. it may not be amazing but it should be better then the pink run this year which personally i felt it to be a bit off a let down :-\
-
Lots of chum and a few coho moving into the lower river on Sunday morning after the tide switched. Heading back out tomorrow morning lookin for coho. It's still early.

I did see a few, but I wouldn't call it "lots." There should be lots soon enough.
-
my uncle got 4 yesterday on a purple and pink fly.
-
hopefully they close it again. It was sad to see all the snagging/rotten fish being retained there last year before it was closed. The staves catch phrase should be "good for the smoker"
hahah every time I hear that line I want to punch the guy in the mouth...IF IT AINT GOOD TO EAT FRESH, IT AINT WORTH TAKING OUT OF BED IMO...
-
Took a drive out to the Stave today to check conditions.
Several hundred pinks and maybe 40 chum in the spawning channel. All were quite ripe.
Lots more mouldy pinks and chum in the toilet bowl, though the water level is much lower than I have seen (it looks more like a urinal).
2 CO's checking licences just up from the TB was good to see, though there were few fishers in that area.
I saw maybe 10 fishers in that area and there was more up closer to the dam. No one I saw had caught anything.
One fly fisher was wet wading at the top of the TB - it didn't look pleasant.
4 cars parked illegally on the west side but no tickets. I watched as one guy waded across to one of the islands. The water was well above his waist and it was 3 hours before high tide. I assume his plan was to stay out ther until the tide went out. He will be very unhappy if they decide to increase the flow from the dam.
Looks too early in my opinion, with no rain forecast for the weekend I can't see a big push of fish coming in.

Wet wading in October is always pleasant. It is the November frost that makes me don the neoprene.

Lots coming for Monday, but that's not going to change the weekend fishing prospects.

lost a rod in stave today, if you found it and see this plz msg me
-
good to see the COs out
-
you wont see any numbers till the 14th or 15th regardless of rain.
-
Went out today and yes you can catch fish, but it is still slow if you after chum. They are there but you will not post big numbers. I checked and last year on October 11th I landed 6 on jigs. So maybe like people say by the 14th or 15tth it should be hopping.
-
here's how last years calender read for the stave.
2010
Oct. 2nd 0 fish
oct. 11th 7chum mostly moldy
oct. 12th 6chum mostly moldy

oct. 15th 40+chum white bellies and chrome 2 doe in the cooler
oct. 17th 40+chum white bellies and chrome 2 doe in the cooler
then they were closed and I winterized the boat.

saw the c.o.'s ticketing a few asian guys there today. Chums are there to be caught if you know how and where to fish for them, Ive only seen boots though. counted over 20 guys there this am but only saw one fish caught, the gong show has begun. I have had to explain to multiple people that the spawning channel is closed so if you happen to see someone fishing there please explain to them that it is not allowed.
I posted on this last year, the boundary signs are not enough. It needs to be SPELLED OUT that the channel is closed. Perhaps people from the board could donate some time and effort in creating some signage to put up? Translations into the various languages and then an image of the closed portion of the channel. One rain soaked notice is not enough IMHO.
Rod do you think DFO would do something like this?? Do people think this would help or would it be a waste of time? People will fish it regardless cuz that's just the way it is?
-
I suggest putting some fence around that channel
2 days ago I already seen DFO putting a new sign on that triangle sign, can't believe they are still fishing there

As it has been pointed out before, the channel is only closed to Salmon fishing. It should be closed completely ending the confusion for people.

I was anchored up a few hundred yards above the highway, and they where entering the river by the hundreds, sounder lit up as schools swam under the boat. Wednesday same thing after the tide switched. they where being tight lipped thought.
-
i heard that there are lots of chumps on the stave, lol, ;D :D ....holmes*
-
After concluding my fishing day I stopped by the river to see how things were going. Quite a few anglers out, with more to come. The spawning channel was occupied by families viewing the spawning salmon and no anglers, thankfully.
-
They updated the freshwater regs to make it permanently closed to all fishing.

It is about time. It is too bad that a change effective in 2009 could not have made it into the 2110-2011 regs.

Was out there today and it was a real piss storm!. It was slow all day, only a few chum caught at the spot we were at. Does anyone know if there is a closer boat launch to stave river than haney marine on fraser river?
-
What tides are the best to fish at Stave?
-
I don't understand this fishery. Mouldy chum should be left to spawn.

This is my vote for dumbest post of the year.
Chum (and particularly Stave chum) are some of the toughest fighting fish in fresh water.
They put coho and steelhead to shame for fighting ability in the same weight class and bruisers approaching 20lbs will destroy a jig.
They are aggressive and willingly take artificials (flies, spoons, jigs) and if you C&R why wouldn't you fish for them?

Forget C&R, if you are allowed to retain a chum, why not? They are not all moldy.

I used to fish Stave River pretty regularly and enjoyed it very much. I have not been back for several years during the salmon season because there are nicer places to fish, but at times I have thought about returning. Chum salmon can be a fantastic gamefish if they are targeted properly. Float fishing by keeping the presentation away from the bottom entices the fresher ones in the system to bite. I find a piece of chartreuse wool works very well. Sometimes dead drifting a float with some roe under it in the toilet bowl can be just as fun. Those coho jacks can steal the bait so quickly and you have to be fast on the hook-set to catch one. Sometimes an adult coho salmon will surprise you too.
Fresh chum salmon can be excellent eating as well. This particular fish caught in 2008 was prepared into pieces for fish and chips.

If coho salmon are not biting, then I am just as happy with chum salmon taking my offering. Too often anglers take them for granted and some even abuse their abundance. Hopefully coastal chum salmon populations across BC will make a rebound in the near future. This is another case of not knowing how good we have it until it is gone.

I have gone to the Stave about three times, and each time I was met with tons of people mostly snagging zombies. I would love to fish for chum like those in your photos, so maybe I will try to find a piece of water with not so many people and maybe go sooner rather than later in the season.

Well I didn't post that last reply the way I wanted to so I'll try again. Don't know why there's not a delete last post button available (or maybe there is and I can't see it).
Could'nt agree more Rod. The few times I visit I have always had a good time and usually catch some fish. Chum are so strong. The only two times I've had fishing rod's break on me was at the Stave River playing a chum.
-
If I was going chum fishing on the Stave it would definitely not be on a weekend.
Also people gather around the same spots and a little walking usually finds decent water.
-
So how is it right now? Lots of fish? Or still gotta wait a bit.

We did very well on Monday, catching more than 50 between 3 of us.
No coho and nothing chrome, just lots of ridiculously strong fighting fish.
I don't know if the chum are hanging out at road accessible areas.
-
Ooh wow, you guys were fishing off a boat? I might go tuesday morning to check it out, ive never never actually been there
-
It was slow there today, a boat would be a big help!!!
-
It's not completely "stuffed" with fish yet but I was able to get into a fair few today in a couple hours
