Title: Is it worth targeting pinks on the Vedder yet?
Post by: fishseeker on September 10, 2011, 09:28:52 AM
Does anyone know if pinks have started moving into the Vedder yet?

I am thinking I would like to take my nephew there with a floating setup.

All I am asking is if there are pinks in there yet.  Is that too much?

I'm sure there is a pink or 4 in there.

don't take it wrong, i think we just point out the truth is i fish are everywhere in rivers now, some move early and some later, you never know, every day is different
I went to fraser river 3 days ago in richmond and got 4 pinks in like 2 hours, i was so sure there were tons of them there until 2 days ago and yesterday i went from 10am - 7pm , not even a bite

best way is always to keep going!

Thanks much frozensalmon.  What you are pointing out was pretty much what I have experienced myself - to be honest I should have known better than to ask a question like this.

Was fishing the Vedder mouth last night. - Lots of fish staging for cooler weather, or night fall to push through.
Not many fish spotted above Keith Wilson

Valid question - and valid responses. I tried a few holes at sundown over the last 2 days with no results. If you're looking for a sure fire day try again in a few weeks - and check out http://www-ops2.pac.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/fos2_Internet/Testfish/rptdtfdparm.cfm?fsub_id=242. (http://www-ops2.pac.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/fos2_Internet/Testfish/rptdtfdparm.cfm?fsub_id=242.) to get an idea of numbers (takes a couple of days to get to the Wack from Langley). I'd say end of September might be better.

I saw a few in the canal below #1 bridge. I was not fishing, but just stopped for a look. Nobody was fishing, so its the calm before the storm.

Thanks much all of you.    I had a suspicion it might be a little early yet but wasn't sure.

I think I will wait a little while.

Gave it a look today. Very little happening from what I saw. Give it a couple of weeks, and it should be good.  ;)

No fish don't go, just people trying to snag the odd pink by sight, sick.

was there today...very quiet, covered alot of water from top to bottom and managed 1 fish between 2 of us. Didnt see very many fish around, none at the kieth wilson a few at tamahi...and i do mean a few. fished from the canal to just below alison. I wasnt suprised to see that the river has changed again, but wow...some areas the water has moved significantly.

 Hook

You are right about catching chinook jacks a few years ago in late August and early Sept  Since then the Chilliwack Hatchery has been cutting production of both chinook and coho. This will have a huge impact on the number of returning adults and jacks. It's a numbers game and we are on the losing side of the equation. :( :(

I wasnt referring to chinook jacks, I was catching all adults and in the same area each time out (2-3times a week) my biggest of the trip was a 40lb female that i gently released to fight another day as i has already taken an 20lber  ;D I was out from daylight until noon each outing and fishing got alot slower after 10-1030am when the sun hit the pool. I think i actually only hit 3 jacks and took only 1 of them because it was a red.....YUM

HOOK - Wished he had time to get out there right now and see if he can get a chromer on the two hander

Lots of them shooting through at the crossing in very shallow water yesterday morning but not real eager to bite. Caught a couple.
Went further down river later on and caught a few more. You had to work for them.

Had a great day on Wed. as well. Released over a dozen pinks ,lost many, and lost a small coho about 3-4 lbs. right at my feet.  Caught all my fish in waist deep or better water. Lots of pinks in the shallow water cruising by, but i could only get them to hit the fly in deeper areas. All on a pink rolled muddler.

We were at the vedder yesterday, the water is quite clear throughout so you have to work hard to entice bites, I found it was a quick change in what you are throwing at them that would spark a bite or two, but after a dozen casts they became spooked. A LOT of people fishing like bozo's out there as well. Several people...just a weight and a hook.

I was there yesterday also fly fishing. I hooked most of the fist at almost the end of my swing or  during my retrieve. A lot moving close in, but not interested in taking the fly. Handle bar seemed to work OK for me.

i love it when the snaggers ask me "what're you using?"  my only response is always "does it really matter?"

makes you sound like a snagger aswell.

I explain the jig thing for chums 50 times a year. If I convert 1, I did my job.

no no -- i am meaning, whatever i am using would not make a difference to someone whom is just snagging away anyhow.  the right bait, fished wrong will not change results. in my opinion
