Hi,
Recently I saw one rod that has rod builder writing like -sage XXXX line 6-12 but no sage logo. Did Sage make some blanks without printed logo? I would appreciate any information.
Thanks,
Lapa

I believe brown blanks don't have any logos printed on them. I have couple of brown built rods and all they have is builder hand writing on them.

I have a brown blank 2106lb. It has the sage logo and model printed on it.

Thanks Tadpole.I also have a few GSH brown(2106 and 4120) but my have sage logo and model. Do you have fly rods or casting?

Same here

Its probably a fugazi, I think if it didnt have a logo on it then it was a different brand and someone was trying to pass it off as a sage. My 2 brown blanks also have the logo.
My friend also has 2 brown blanks with sage logo. Last time I saw this type of rod on eBay. I asked owned (he has 100% positive feedback with 800 transactions) to confirm that it is Sage blank but I got answer: "It is Sage because rod builder put it in writing" ?????
Maybe somebody have more information.

ive owned probably 20 brown blank sages...all have had the sage logo and model on them..never seen one without it

Cheap imitations from overseas ?
-
both of mine also have Sage label and model. How else would you know what rod you have ???

I have a few older model sage brown blanks with written serial number on it only, but still has the sage logo on it.....

Only time I've seen one without the logo is when the builder has covered it up with an extra long cork, or done something else weird. It's possible the builder could have removed it, but you'd have to ask yourself why, it's not like it would be a bad thing to show that your rod was a sage. I'd be like ripping the all the logos off your car...

Both brown blank 4120s that I own(ed) have the Sage logo.
Both were custom built.

During the era when brown blanks were produced, Sage occasionally offered " Blems" for sale
These blanks had slight imperfections: Some were slightly discoloured, others may not have been perfectly straight.
Sage would sell these blanks to rod builders and retail outlets at a discounted price.
The only catch Sage never silk screened their name on these Blanks

Dug out from the WWW:

Very visible logos. :)

I used one on the Vedder this morning, a logo free 6113 RPLB. It's a great switch rod; throws 400 grains plus 8' T-14. If there's an imperfection on this rod I don't see it but unfortunately it's entirely useless because it hasn't caught a fish for a week :D

Back in early 90's I brought blemish Sage fly rod RPL 796 from Riddick's or Roddick's Fly.... I can not remember actually name of store it used to be on Canada way road near Boundary road. I remember the lady name was Kathy.

Ruddicks, and yes the ladies name was kathy. Her father in law was named Ken, her husbands name is Malcolm. The original store was in maple Ridge in Ken's basement. Just a little bit of history from the old guy.

Yeah, I remember Ruddicks. In the late 90's and early 2000's, they were at Granville Island (too bad they're not still there, as I frequent Granville Island), then moved to North Vancouver before closing the shop. My good friend and fishing mentor's son and nephew used to work for Ruddicks - now both boys have moved on to other shops and both are well known top rods - fly and gear.
As for the Sage logo, I didn't know about the blemish blanks. Interesting. I'm guessing that Sage won't warranty these rods? Nice photos Milo - I've got Sage fly rods, and now a CT 2106 (green blank) myself and it rocks! I know it's not the classic brown blank, but it's a great rod! My RPL+ is a classic brown blank though... ;)

Thanks a lot for responses. The rod I saw without logo was top quality built. A really nice rod. I don't think experienced rod builder
will spend energy to produce fake rod. :-\

I was mistaken about Sage not having any printed info on brown blank of my 4120. I just pick it up from replacing the guides. My old rod looks like new again :)
