I got a Daiwa 7 foot spinmatic ultralight rod for Christmas from the wife :) after seeking out the opinion of many of you a few months back ;D
Any suggestions for a lightweight ultralight reel to pair it with? I will be fishing mostly local lakes for rainbow trout, and some tidal fraser, maybe try some carp this year, probably going to use 6 pound line. I looked online, doesn't seem like Daiwa makes their ultralight reel specifically for the spinmatic series rods anymore. Any suggestions for a good spinning reel? Looking to spend no more than $140.
Thanks!

i have many smaller spinning reels i would say a shimano sedona in a 1500 or even a 2500 would be mighty fine, pfluger makes some decent reels aswell

I have always preferred Shimano. You have to figure that bike parts take a lot more pounding than reels, so they should be good at building them.
Sedona is an awesome reel, but I prefer rear drag so that I can adjust the tension while fighting a fish. This is especially important with light line.
I just bought a Shimano Spirex RD which is working great for me ($70 online).

okuma avengers work well and don't cost too much.

I'll have to add these ones on the list to research ... anyone have any experience with the Abu Garcia 300 or 500 series reels?
-
I have one of the cheaper ABU Cardinal ones on my UL set up. I've caught numerous trout, bull trout, white fish and pink salmon on it over the years. Never once have I maintenance the reel or anything, changed my line once every couple years, thats about it. No issues.

The Sedona does come in a rear drag, though I haven't seen many other than the one I picked up a few years ago, so I'm not sure if they make it anymore. I've always prefered the rear drag spinning reels as I find it easier to change the drag while fighting a fish than having my hand near the front of the reel when a fish is running.

never used a rear drag spinning reel, couldnt see myself using one really... would seem weird and more time fumbling and well poof out comes the hook...

i have the abu cardinal ul set up from wholesale sports. never a problem with the reel..but have went thru a few rods.
-
which cardinal are you using for your UL setup? is it the 100 series or 300 series?
-
300u. you can buy the whole combo at wholesale sports for about $70.00.

I have and am happy with Abu Garcia-102. i have it paired with 6'6 ul rod. good fit for 6 lb.
Okuma avenger is a GREAT reel if you can keep it clean...so I've found.

The reviews of the Abu Garcia seem pretty good. Tough decision, 100, 300 or 400 series.

My reel is this http://fishingreelworld.com/pro1204011.html
and my rod is a shimano stimula, 5'6 UL 2-6lb
Like I said I've had no issues and the biggest fish I've pulled in is probably a hefty 5-6 pound Pink salmon, and the rod and reel have been bounced off the rock many times

You should try one. It is exactly the opposite experience. No fumbling, no switching hands, no putting your hands near the line when it is zinging out...

thinking i will stick it out, why mess with a good thing.. maybe get a 3wt fly rod and try that this year, but the shimano static has caught my eye numerous times.. i have used flies on my spinning rod and have had great success.

ended up getting a abu garcia 301u, tried it out for a few hours, very happy with it, thanks for the input :)
