Title: How long do you think Sockeye will be open for?
Post by: bcguy on August 14, 2010, 07:33:35 PM
What do you think? I have heard a total of 8 days will be given to sports fisherman, but some talking about an opening until the Coho start working their way up.
Anyone heard anything?

A far comment but if the weather remains warm and a lot of morts start happening with a concern for those fish on the way to their natal streams start to perish it could be cut off on 24 hours notice.

One could think after a couple of weeks most anglers should have all the sockeye they need to can.

When visiting the river today I was given several reports of double dipping but also have been told most anglers take their 2 fish and off the river for the day which is good news. ;D

An 8 day opening would mean this Monday would be the last day. Seems odd that they would close it after the weekend considering the test fishing numbers in Areas 12/13/20 are as strong as ever the last few days.

When do the interior coho start to show up?

The earliest I caught one in the Fraser in the Chilliwack area was August 30.

Thompson River closes for fishing for salmon fishing on September 20 so it can close 10 days or so before that on the Lower Fraser as the date changes as you move up river to protect the endangered Interior Coho but regulations could change I guess from previous years.

The interior coho salmon management measures in the Lower Fraser River usually begins the day after the September long weekend. Measures typically include no salmon fishing and bait ban. These measures usually stay in effect until the second Thursday of October. Sockeye salmon opening on the Fraser River, if the escapement number remains as forecasted, usually remains opened until the day before these measures kick in. If escapement requirement is not being met and other issues arise, then an immediate closure maybe implemented.

Would the Vedder/Harrison white springs be migrating with the interior coho? Hopefully not to many of those get caught in the nets and will provide for a good fall fishery.

4 yrs ago stayed open till  5th sept. this run looks as strong as that one so should stay open.unless jimmy takes them all in the seine.last time 1 millon extra taken by commercials. dont let sports be pushed around,we hardly make a dent in the run.water temp is about the same as 2006 but with the heat right now will rise.that might be reason to shut it down.will natives stop fishing?.

A little sketchy on the double dipping, but definately fish being caught for every one in the family party, pretty sure I saw a two yr old with his limit ::)

Sketchy because there is not a lot of enforcement to deal with it, although some plain clothes stuff going on. ;D ;D

In my opinion, if the little one can't throw the rod, then sure have dad throw it for them.  But the kid has to bring in the fish or at least try to.  Having dad bring in all the fish, is just double dipping IMHO.

So barring any warm water issues, we could potentially see Sockeye open until the day after the long weekend?
Then the Coho start running? When do the first runs start hitting the Vedder?

Bcguy, I just checked the seven day forecast for the Chilliwack and surrounding area.  Very warm temperatures will continue until Wednesday. A cooling trend is on the way and there may even be rain for the weekend.  That break in the warm temperatures is a blessing in disguise for the salmon.
