hey guys leaving in the next hour and still trying to decide if i want to go the chehalsi or the stave any one know who the chehalis is right now
-
Between those two, I would go to the Stave, but be prepared for TONS of people!!!!!
Rick
-
yeah thats not what i want to deal with lol but i jsut checked the chehalis web cam and there a ton of fish in there and it showing some nice chrome fish so i think im heading there
-
my pick would be the chehalis too. not a big fan of those crowds on the stave and for some reason the chehalis has so much more alure due to its beauty and tranquilility.
-
Does anyone have a link to the web cam?
Appreciated, thanks,
Steve

there appears to be a cutty in amongst the salmon cleaning up :)
-
Quite a few cutthroat when I last checked! :)
Is anyone else having problems with the video feed freezing after watching for a minute or two? I can't watch for longer than 90 seconds or so without the video stream freezing up on me.
Lucky - send me an email if you'd like, I can't reply to messages here! :)
-
only 1 coho visible at 220pm. when i looked yesterday i counted 10 and only 1 chum ;D today its the opposite LOL
-
yeah ive being having problems with the webcam also
as for the fishing lots and lots of chum around water was pretty low took home two chrome females for the smoker didnt see any coho or springs
ok also maybe someone can answer this question me and my buddy each hooked a male chum that had a green tag in it anyone what these are all aobut thanks
-
Is the webcam right at the hatchery?
-
There's a coho chilling in tight with the chum... didn't they they did that- at least I've never seen that close in the wild. Also, a nice rainbow in there too about 1/3 the size as the chum... which still makes for a big rainbow.
-
Oooops!!! ::)
-
Yeh, i think Chehalis is definately a place i'd be checking out.Judging by the channel cam there seems to be a pretty good mix of Coho in the channel.Plus the new trail should really open up lower river access by the sounds of it . I heard it was about 3 km long.
-
I'm not even gonna touch that one Noxcape :-X. Does anyone know which side this new trail is? If its where I think it is, that would be the hatchery side???. Cheers
-
From what i've read its on the other side.Cross the bailey bridge turn right and i believe its down behind the easter seal run.
-
has anyone actually walked this new trail I am interested in knowing if it is worth the walk I am not opposed to exploring but would like to know if it is worth a 6 KM hike.
tried to find a map of this trail but couldn't find any information on it.
-
Talked to the hatchery guys a few years ago about the tags and they said they put them on when they do their seine netting. They did not say why.
-
The new path is through the campsite side of the river. We walked it for over and hour . It takes you almost down to the mouth of the river. Lots of log jams and big pools way down low.
-
serously i did read it and didnt see it i even walked by the hatchery workers and no one said anythign cupcakes i feel like crap
-
no pics of the river but the water was pretty damn low
-
river i park at the hatchery then we walked down the river looking for deep spot we walked about 5 ks or more today not many deep pockets
-
so are you trying accuse me of fishing the hatchery because i wasnt
-
Hey noxcape I don't think anyone said that ...you were fishing the hatchery outlet channel by the sounds of it but if you went that far you were well beyond the boundary.
The boundary is fairly well marked and it is quite close to the hatchery.
you would have eventually met up with the main river if you walked far enough.
-
yeah i know where the boundary for fishing is you would kind of have to be blind to miss it lol
sorry for going off liek that i was feeling like **** for not being able to find out the river was closed for chum
-
Don't beat yourself up over it. It was an honest mistake by a well intentioned individual. It's not as if chum are in danger of extinction or anything. It's just unfortunate for you that it happened publically ;)
-
the chehalis is always closed for chum retention until November. i'v seen other fisherman do the same thing every year near the hatchery channel....bonk chum in October. lol there's so many chum that come up there makes me wonder why it is even closed at all. ;D

People are fishing this channel! I see the hooks and wool or bait floating by! Is that allowed at that spot? I dont know where the camera is but seems like a great spot for snaggers.
some beauty cuttys and rainbows in there tho! ;D ;D ;D ;D
-
The camera is right at the hatchery!! No fishing there.
-
You're not kidding about the trout. So many there, feasting on salmon eggs I would assume.
-

Im pretty sure i saw hooks and floats go by. someone is. i dont intend on fishing anywhere near the hatchery. not my idea of fun or fishing. You're not kidding about the trout. So many there, feasting on salmon eggs I would assume.
They are some real nice ones there. Some fattys!
-
"They are some real nice ones there. Some fattys!"
I noticed that. With the large run of pinks this year some of the trout and dollies have gotten ridiculously fat.
-
that makes me want to go fishing for cutties.
-
the trout you are seeing could also be coho jacks. I looked ealier and saw a coho jack cruising around in there and a cutty ;D but only 1 adult coho this time but loads of chummies.
the stuff you saw float by might not have been someone fishing but just debris floating about. its pretty hard to fish where the cam is because its mounted right where the little bridge and chain link fence are.
-
i did see a few jacks but im certain they were mostly cuttys and bows. not many adult coho. the water clarity has deteriorated a lot since early afternoon. does this mean the water level is rising or river is getting dirty?
-
I have been watching periodically, the small fish appear to be primarily rainbows with the odd coho jack and cutthroat mixed in.
-
well the water going by the camera is only coming out of the hatchery so it shouldnt be colouring up unless the river rises quite a bit however if its raining really heavy or when lots of fish get in there thrashing around it can stir up the fine sand thats in the hatchery channel.
-
Any report about how the fishing is lately? I am trying to decide between going there and the Vedder tomorrow...
-
there are more places to fish then just those 2 rivers ya know ;) Im heading out tomorrow and not fishing either of those ;D
-
Actually I cancelled my plans for Saturday to get a few things done and I'll be hitting the H on Sunday with a fly rod. Anyways thanks for the info ??? :P ;D
-

Do you have any rods left??? :'(
-
Trust me buddy i have backups ;D just no trout rods left right now cause they are both in for warranty :'( :'(
-
whats the water level and clarity like right now? any help would be appreciated
-
checked it out today and clarity was horrible just like everywhere else around here :'(
-
thought it might be. thanks.
-
it changed a little bit compare to last year. I find there is more fast water and less slow deep pools
-
just took a look on the cam and at 5:25pm there was a nice hatchery steelhead on the cam ;D it looked like a summer run by the colouring. there was also like 5or6 trout zipping around in there ;D and of course tons of chum moving in and out of focus ::)
-

I agree. >:( I hope once the river gets back to a good level, some of those pools might reappear. I was there Sunday and man, was it ever low. Not many coho around. Went back yesterday and it looked like someone flushed the crapper. I bet it'll be fantastic tomorrow morning and of course I have to work. ::)
-
From what I've been hearing, the Coho are there and in good numbers if you know where to look.
I may have to try it out this week.
-
Good shape today fished it for 45 minutes and took a clipped coho jack. ;D Saw another adult taken.
-
good tohear that there is good fishing in the river chris
-
Fish the Chehalis yesterday in the afternoon. Fished some nice water but only managed a spring jack and a chum to hand.
-
I am planning a trip to the Chehalis next week. It has been 12+ years since I was last there. I know how to get to the Hatchery. However, once I am there, I cannot remember which way to go. Could someone point me in the right direction?
Please feel free to E-Mail me.
Thanks, John

ditto (only it's been 8 years since I've been there and I've only started fishing 2 years ago) so if someone would be so kind as to email me the what where-for's it would be much appreciated!
-
park at the campground and walk to trail you will see a couple of signs
-
you can go either way (left or right)...you might have to do some bushwhacking, but its worth it to get away from the crowds, as I imagine that system is only going to see more and more people as the Vedder slows down...don't fish the spawning channel as all the fish in there are ready to die and they should be left alone. Good luck!
-

I second this. The portion of the river that flows past the hatchery is very low now and can basically be considered an extension of the hatchery channel. Bushwacking through the jungle to the main channel can be time consuming. I would personally drive up to the campsite and hike the trail. You'll cover much more water that way.
-
Thanks for the info everyone !! :D
Is the campsite on the same road as the Hatchery?

Yes... just alittle past the hatch ;D
-
I am looking at taking my trailer up to the Chehalis for a couple of days this coming week
Is the campground still open?
How are the water conditions?
Appreciate the info...
Many Thanks,
Greg

I have not fished the chehalis for some time due to past issues with B&E's and vandalism. It used to be one of my favorite rivers before. Has anyone had or heard of these problems of late?
-
Thanks Chris - Good to Know.
-
C&P from email today.
Further to our recent action on the Stave river, a similar set of circumstances has developed at the Chehalis hatchery outlet.
Over the last several years and as a result of large flood events, the Chehalis mainstem has established a new channel on the east side of the flood plain which has isolated flow from the hatchery. The new watercourse is now an extension of the hatchery outlet which had been closed (previously posted boundary signs located at the confluence of the outlet and the mainstem) when the river flowed in its original location.
Due to this change and pursuant to section 37(4) of the Fishery (General) Regulations, DFO will be establishing a new boundary one hundred meters downstream from its present location in order to protect salmon concentrated in the new hatchery outlet. The new boundary is consistent with other facilities where fishing is not allowed in hatchery outlets or other collection facilities. The new boundary signs will be in place by this weekend and a Fishery Notice will be sent out shortly.
-
is the chehalis going to be a good bet for the next few weeks??what all can be caught there,is the vedder the onl;y place for steelhead??
-
the chehalis is good for chums and coho. the trail is well marked now and what a relief compared to endless bushwacking from past experiences.
-
sounds I need to get out this weekend and hook it up ;D
-
any reports? How does the river look after all this rain?
-
according to the fish cam nothing but chum boots
http://www.hancockwildlifechannel.org/staticpages/index.php/20071006124325454
and not so positive reports from the forums on other sites.
-
Went to the river Saturday morning. It was pretty high and buy noon had come up another foot and vis down to near zero.Pretty close to blowing right out i'd say.Walked down the new trail as far as a guy could go and the river was starting to flow right threw it.Everyone in the area was makin a beeline out of there , it was coming up fast . Pretty scary place to get caught if the river starts to blow threw the bushes.I'd say a couple of days without rain and it might be in good shape .Beached a couple of so-so springs but didn't see any coho caught anywhere.......
-
Walked down to the end of the trail or where their trail sign no longer had an arrow on it. The river flows right through it right there. We thought it would continue further down or maybe it does if the river is lower. Does anyone know?
There did not appear to be any chum in the main river and not very many in the channel. Does that mean that chum run is over? We didn't get very good reports from anyone trying to get coho or chum.
-
Went out today, not much but alot of ugly chum
