Title: Is This A Good Spot To Fish?
Post by: chris gadsden on October 20, 2009, 09:34:48 PM
For those that have not visited Tamihi Rapids.

Also large chinook salmon and other salmon spawning in a small spawning channel. Maybe we should have not got so close to try to film them. :-[

Who in the right mind would fish next to that many people? Does nobody have jobs anymore? ???

I fished the upper river when I arrived late morning. It seemed 90% of the vehicles were parked at 2 spots  ;D

And you should have seen the coho they had too. All I could muster was one coho jack in the spot Rhino and I fished but we had lots of bites and it was enjoyable having the run to ourselves. With that many coho going through I thought we would have got at least one adult but the peace we had is worth more than having to endure what you saw above just to catch a fish. :o

The good thing about all the people crowding one spot is that it leaves the rest of the river to me. :D

Thats the only good thing about it but I was glad to see very little garbage left there too.

fishing is supposed to be relaxing not a god damn gong show. id rather catch nothing all day and fish with myself or a buddy, rather than catch a ton of fish and and deal with all the illegal fishing tactics

This is really not bad at all at tamahi when water is high Coho is running, I seen people are 3 deep 20 years ago. sad at least did not see people take snag fish out of it then, may be they do now, i have not look at the show for a long time.

I would saw 99 % are just lined or snagged, its so sad that fishing if you can call it that has slipped to such a low level.

I suppose if you got a itchy back there's someone near anough to scratch it. ;D I imagine anyone from that crowd would be a curse to be fishing by. As they would just stand right by you and start to fish. Lots of nice gear in that video to snag with too.

This is silly.
During last weeks blowout there were very few fishermen anywhere, except here.
30 cars must have been parked there.
This used to be a nice quiet spot.    ::)

you know whats hilarious about everyone being all jammed in there is that you could go fish water downstream from them by yourself and catch loads of fish im sure of it. The water is basically all the same around there and coho love sitting in that pocket water stuff. I think the water stays about the same consistency until you hit the area near Bell Acres (i may be wrong though cause i dont fish in there very often LOL)

I stopped by to have a look and it was kind of hilarious and sad at the same time to see this spectacle. I think the absolute worst thing that happens at Tamihi is the amount of lead weight that gets left behind from snaggy rocks and line breakage from playing snagged fish. Just think how much lead is deposited at Tamihi year after year.

And that's why I stay as far away from there as I can!!!!! What a nightmare.

Could not agree more... Tamahi is strange that way, and most of these guys tend to concentrate on the north side of the river (less walking I suppose).  Same thing happens in that run just a couple hundred metres downstream.  Short floating pocket water between these two spots can be very productive.  Although most people associate Tamahi with flagrant snagging, I have a soft spot for it since I first learned how fish here over 15 years ago.  I recall that most people short floated back then.

must have been over 30 cars in that spot on Sunday. I only watched for 20 mins and must have seen 12 hatcherys bonked in that time. A couple of the guys were amazing flossers, and were hooking a coho every couple minutes, they would then bonk the coho and walk it up the bank asking "who wants this coho" then back to fishing. My Heros.

Chris, Did that one guy in the Video tell you to turn it off? they obviously know what there doing....

chris, I fished a local stream on monday. lost a nice coho right of the bat then released a nice wild coho about 10lb. was about to leave when I saw fish surfacing down stream from me. waited until they were passing and started tossing spoons at them,  three  and four at a time rolled in front of me looked like they were right out of the chuck, silver as new dimes  do you think they would strike? would'nt even chase my spoon. 20 minutes and they were gone. If you only knew what was swimming by you ignoring your gear. coho season I  fish spoons most of time trying to avoid other salmon present in the river

Chris
I assume you didn't get any fish today. However, a much more enjoyable situation then that at Tamihi. Gong show to say the least.

ive never fished the tamihi due to the gong show and not about to start anytime soon. there are so many spots on the river that are free from other anglers and good fishing too. it just takes a bit of exploring every year as river changes.

I didn't know you could fish rapids like that. What kind of fish hold there, and how do you fish them?

I didn't think so either till I went there a couple days ago for the first time. People were catching everything: cohos/jacks, springs, chums and whatnot. I caught my first ever coho that day in that particular area after about 4 hours or so  :D The technique for fishing that is short floating in the slower moving pools, haven't seen anyone catch anything in the rapids out in the middle.

I knew it...it's a short floater's paradise  ::)
I doubt that there would be many 'fishermen' short floating at Tamahi.

I'ts so much more enjoyable to walk 2-300 meters and have some elbow room.  then you can have a pleasant conversation with the person who you may end up fishing near. Much better than spending the day being anoyed and pissed at the idiots on either side of you who seem to have no common sense at all when it comes to sharing the river and having an enjoyable day.   Better to fish, relax and have a good day than do battle with knuckle heads.
