Just wondering how everyone is doing for coho this year? I'm at 27 hatcherys and 17 wild
-
damn skunkin two weeks... :'(
-
Caught my first 2 Coho ever yesterday. Both hatchery.
-
Right on! My first year i didnt get any, my second year i got 16 and this is my third year and caught 44 as of right now. Just gotta find the hot spot.
-
This has definately been a good season. One of the best in the past several years.
I have caught about half of what you have on the vedder and 2 from a different system.
and there's still another 6 weeks of coho fishing!
-
first year for coho on the vedder and so far. only 6 hatch and 1 wild.
-
I am most thankful for everything I learned watching some of the more experienced anglers out there on the river yesterday (despite the high number of jack asses). Smaller amount of roe, switched my hook from a 4 to a 2, little bit of peach wool, getting rid of the slack while drifting so I could see and react to their soft bites and fishing the hole near the bushes where there was cover.
All these things made for a much better afternoon then my morning. Don't get me wrong, I am happy about my Coho, but I am even happier learning techniques that will pay off with more successful fishing in the future.
-
3 Hatchery 1 Wild. I've only really been out two days though.
-
44 coho :o. I have only landed 3 jacks.
What the hell am I doing wrong?????????????
and I am not a newbie. I am using good roe, or blades but no adults yet. I have not even seen any landed when i have been out.
How many times you been out?
Signed
Somewhat frustrated
-
Jack squat so far :-\
-
ive got hoes in different area codes ;)
-
A few coho jacks this week but only one coho salmon landed. :-X :o
-
Hmmm been home for a total of 4 days of fishing. In that time I've hooked 5 landed 1. (Maybe a total of 20 hrs on the river).
Landed a few springs as well and lost some HAWGS.
Also saw about 15 or so landed in the areas I was in in that number of days (Most were on spoons + small trout rods).
One day I must have watched 60 coho go by (all but 5 were hatch) and hooked 3 of them on blades (was sight fishing a tailout).
Cool to watch them grab your gear and not see any register on a bigger float. Once I went down to a 12 gm drennan and 3 spilt shot I could see every hit.
-
4 Hatch 3 wild in 2 trips to the ved this year including the ten pounder in the avatar which had sea lice on it ;)
-
I caught 23 wild ,no hatch :'( last sunday on the fly rod heading out tomorrow morning.
-
One coho retained in three outing. Have yet to find a "hot spot" for coho this year where I saw anything but the odd one caught.
-
lost 2 more yesterday, 1 first cast :( But i think its time to hang up the rods for a while due to this rain. Anyone know the conditions right now??
-
I have never caught an adult male coho.
Did release a jack this year and landed 2 hatchery and 1 wild, all over 10 lbs.
All female.
Two years ago I fished a lot more and landed a lot more fish and all female again. Fish were notably smaller then.
I remember a buddy and I were feeling bad for almost every fish we caught was a female.
Ain't that weird.
-
Hmm - that is a little weird adriaticum. My first ever coho from the Vedder was a hatchery male taken on a coho blue fly pattern. My second Vedder coho was caught the same day on a rolled muddler and it too was a hatchery buck! That was back in 2001.
Fast forward to this year...all of the "adult" coho I retained from the Vedder/Chilliwack were female, ranging from 6 - 10 lbs. I have taken a few jacks - all cookie cutter 14 inchers. I did release a 12+ lb wild coho buck - he was a BEAUTY!. :) The adult fish seem to be a little bigger this year... :D
-
I'm not saying that this is happening on this thread but I have been stunned at how many people with high end gear and $60,000 jet boats think they have got a coho when it is actually a female pink. "Awww another wild they'll say."

[quotelol, at least there looking at it that way, instead of the other way around....
LOL, good point!
-
Caught a nice hatchery yesterday and a lot of chum.
-
1 Wild and lost 1. How do you spot cohos in the river? I can only tell if they are sprinf because they are huge, pinks swim very close to shore and chums from the red markings.
-
Look for black tails...
-
Look for black tails...
???
-
I hate all of you 20 something Coho's caught people :(. Every Vedder outing has been a dud for me - though I can claim to have had one on.
-
???
He asked how to spot coho in the river....
Look for black tails.
-
... How do you spot cohos in the river?
Using polarized sunglasses (regardless of weather and lighting conditions) is by far your best bet for successfully spotting and locating fish that are sitting on or near the bottom, as the polarization allows you to see through the glare of the water's surface to spot and identify the fish and promising looking lies.
If you are fly fishing, I normally look for rising or "porpoising" fish in the "frog water" (slow-flowing or slack water) of the calmer stretches of the river, or search for deeper slots or pools that have slow to moderate flows. They can also be found near the edges and seams of the faster flowing water.
Hope this helps in some way...
Cheers,
Todd

Ha, ha I remember netting a fish for some fella who said he hasn't caught any pinks that day but lots of coho.
I came and caught 3 pinks in an hour.
I netted a female pink for him and he let it go.
He said wild coho.
I didn't say anything ::)

Thanks for your advise. I do have a pair of polarized glasses and can see the fish. I think I have to catch more fish, then I will be able to see the difference.

I know the temptation is to say nothing and let him enjoy his belief that it was another coho, but people out there NEED to know what they are catching... ID is a big issue on the Vedder.
Maybe suggest politely that you have made the same mistake in the past, but that "it's actually a pink salmon, not a coho - look, you can tell by these spots on the tail, etc".

-
3 wild released, only managed to keep a couple of jacks so far.
-
28 hatcherys and 17 wild, landed a 8 pld hatch yesterday. Lost 1 today :(
-
Howdy,New to the site and forum, nice to see you all, hope to chat and talk with some great ppl. Kinda new to the sport again to ..its been a few years. Still trying to find a hotspot for coho,,maybe up top or down below?..And do need some glasses to help see the fish for sure, I can see(ha ha)..how they would help.Been out 3 times(2hrs each)..few pinks and 2 springs, nice but still no coho.(bummer)

You know, this story puts a recent experience of mine in a whole new light...
Last week as my buddies and I are pulling out for the day, another guy and his posse come into our spot behind us. He claims that he caught 17 wild coho there the previous week. I quickly assessed his gear and approach and was a little dubious...and a little impressed. After hearing your story, I think I get the whole picture...
-
I think CohoKiller just wants to pat his own back in public LOL I usually dont catch many coho in the Vedder unless im fly fishing then i get tons of wild ones for some reason ::) This year i only got 1 hatchery because i was after whiteys for roe. now im stocked up with roe and onto other systems for all my coho action ;)
-
Im at just over 100 if you count 2 different regions
-
i suck at fishing
-
dont worry guys i will catch up to ya very fast now ;) might even pass you by very quickly. I had one day before where i got like 40coho in one day, this was a few years back and also not on the Vedder. I like fishing places where the coho are all wild stock and you can catch lots and they are so aggressive and a riot to catch for the acrobatics ;D
-
Im pretty sure that was coho killer on his b day a few years back ::)
-
40 landed in one day thats amazing. I heard that there was some guy who posted on a forum that he got 86 in a day or something insane like that? Anyon hear of or know this guy? Id like to shake his hand and maybe learn a thing or two from him!
Sounds like ocean fishing for cohos which I have experienced before.
-
I'm hoping to head out this sunday and catch some coho, got some cured roe and hope my luck will be good.Havent caught one yet this year...I want at least one keeper this yr.Any helpful tips on catching coho?...if anybody wants to share.(I understand if you dont lol)
-
the main reason we got that many fish was that the spot we were in was full of fresh fish and NO chum at all. it was like a fish every 2nd or 3rd cast for the entire day using tiny wool ties. everytime they stopped grabbing one colour combo we changed it a bit and bang bang bang ;D We did this i think 3 trips in a row. I had my 4 fish one day in 4 casts and then just had fun all day to piss everyone off cause i wasnt giving up my spot HAHAHAHA ;D of course this just doesnt seem to happen anymore. I think my best has been high teens to low twenties in a day since and all on the fly as well and none being hatchery ::)
I think ED is right that it was Coho_Killer (who doesnt post anymore it seems) he is a buddy of mine and called me from the river that day so i think i might believe him but he might have been off a bit however there was 2 of them so its very possible if you find a hueg pocket of biting fish.
-
New Count: 32 hatcherys 22 wild, For some reason only wild ones came to shore today :-\
-
Wow!!... :o...Thats alot of fish in one day..I'll be happy if I can land 3-4 in couple hrs of fishing...But going out this sunday..and maybe sat..to for a couple and hope to land some.Love the fight in coho's..and they look so good when fresh...
-
Coho Killer, you dont happen to drive a van or work van do you, or your buddy does?
-
3 wild and 1 hatch so far.
-
Nope
-
more fish ?? i would go with middle to the top if i was heading for some coho
-
Awesome, thank you...thats where I was planning on going this weekind was up top near tamahi or up more. And for sure going for coho.Thats the only fish to go for this time of year and hopefully I land a few this time out,got all my roe and gear and all day on sunday.
-
Got 2 more hatchery this morning, pretty slow though. Tons of coho in the hatchery.
-
Got my first ever coho (hatchery) today while fishing in the Tamahai area ;D
-
My buddy has been fishing the Vedder for the last 3 days. So Far 8 taken home, and 23 let go in three days.

Finally go 2 hatchery last Wednesday. Fished upper river, it was high but visibility was good. Saw many in the early morning, then they where gone in the afternoon.
-
whats the visibility like in the upper river? any help thanks.
-
Landed 2 more hatcherys this afternoon, 1 cromer and 1 tomato. Lost 2 right on shore :-[

Went up just above the tamahi bridge..the local hotspot was full.very full.so tried just above and below and didnt get anything in about 3 hrs..I'am I doing something wrong here?..I used wool..and short leader..and went in holes that looked great but nothing. And I see guys yanking out some while I was there..like a fair bit and on the forum as well..wish I could land some..Any tips would sure be great...but still nice to get out and try.

It sounds like you're doing everything correctly. Don't pay too much attention to what everyone else is doing there as Tamahi is renowned for flossing/snagging, although short floating pocket water can be very effective there. With the visibility down, wool probably isn't the greatest option, roe, blades, or jigs would probably a better choice (ie. something with scent or with higher visibility). Also, when the water is high and vis is low, try fishing pockets close to shore, even if they're only a few feet deep (adjust your float accordingly), you'd be surprised where fish will be holding. If not for coho, you should at least hook into some chum!!
-
Awsome..thnx for the tips and advice...I guess i have should have known better and went with something with some smell...Just can get frustrating..and also being a lil green doesnt help either...its been a few yrs(3-4)..so kinda outta touch with it all...like riding a bike..it all comes back in time. And your right..seems to be some flossing or snagging going on..I wonder how many were actually caught..but..when you feel a bump or see the float go down..arent ya suppose to hit it...
-
Catch 44, Fishing around tamahi offers only limited water to hook fish fairly while the river is running high. The best way to fish in the Tamahi Rapids for me is to watch the snaggers/flossers and find which side of the river most of the coho are being pulled out of. Once you have picked a side, look for a slow slick of water, usually behind logs and boulders which hug the bank. I find fishing this short slow slick or stretch of water is best done with roe, match your bait size to the water clarity. This has worked for me, I only fish this way when the water is high with very little vis, as I know the fish are moving and Ill be passing it right infront of there faces.
Of course youll never catch the numbers of fish the way the other guys are fishing, but youll at least walk away feeling good with a fish that took your bait, unlike the 100's of fish that were pulled from the river unwillingly.
-
yea for sure..i was on the side of the river where the fish where comming up..and who am i to say..no one of coarse..but saw lots of fisihgn rods being gripped and ripped.but if the float dipps or or a big bump......but again im a rookie..so whos to say..yea when i go on the next weekend..im going to use my cured roe..and head above tamahi..like alison pool or something...or maybe down low..train bridge area..and thnx for the tips and advice..its great...and great bs as well..thank you.
-
another tip if you are fishing pocket water is to find a slow spot just above a large rock or rocks that the fish have a difficult time to swim by. Quite often they'll ascend the fash water and then hold just above the large rocks in slower water. I find I have much better success at the end of the 'pocket' than the front of it. And yes I agree with the comment about fishing close to shore. You'd be surprised at how many good fish can be caught right next to shore in a few feet of water, if you find the right spot when the water is high.

It's not easy fishing there, it took me about 4 hours to catch one coho..and that's all I got that day. Gotta keep playing around with your float depths, until you hit bottom and then adjust it accordingly. It takes a lot of patience, but even if you hook into one fish it makes the trip out there worth it.
-
1 crome wild landed today, and lost a tomato.
-
Ummm....why would you want to fish Tamahi right now? I don't see any enjoyment in standing in one spot fishing a 5x5' pocket of water.
Wouldn't you rather get a nice drift and fish some tailouts?
Nothing wrong with fishing pocket water, but normally this involves moving from pocket to pocket looking for fish.

Personally, it's not the fishing for me. I like to have some decent room while fishing to avoid tangle ups with people whose fish that take off on them, and DON'T call it out telling people that they have a fish on >:(. That happened to me TWICE the other day with the same guy, he was fishing a little ways up from me, would get a fish on..and then I'd just barely see his black/grey braid line come in front of me as soon as I casted then we had a nice couple of tangle ups.

I was fishing a little way above Allison canyon on Thursday and friday last week. Thursday and at first light on Friday the water color was good caught Coho, Chum, and springs on bright green early in the day, then switched to peach with a little bit of bubble gum pink and caught the same.
ended up with 3 nice chrome hatchery coho. Put back 2 hatchery coho jacks, several wild Coho and probably 10-15 dark springs and chums each day.
Friday morning after the water came up I changed to a dark pink and red combination and had luck catching fish.
working a small slot with no other people around and staying back from the edge seem to be the key elements after you find a color that works that day..

wool color must be the key, seems you had good success with all your color combos. :D

Finding the right color for the day and particular time seems to always be the most dificult part...
-
Only hooked 2 this morning and lost both, 1 right on shore. Water is pretty high with low vis. Time to take a break for a couple of days :(

Awesome tips..thnx for them all..and keep em comming. And for sure it takes time and wait..which can get to me..I like the look of a nice coho..and taste so good to...and for sure the colour combo seems to play a part.I was red with some peach wool, not even a sniff. And I to usally do perfer a nice drift with a tail out and some room, but wanted to catch a coho bad so i went to the local hotstop.Dont think i'll go there much...just not really for me i think.
-
And im going to go out this weekend again...somewhere..and try some roe i have cured...see what it gives me..spring or coho i dont care..just love fishing and getting out there...but love the fight when hooked on...but might try allsion pool way...is it good up that way..or crazy as well...havent been there yet this yr,cause the tamahi thing..just not sure about..all sorts up that way.

LOLOLOL....
But seriously, wool can produce. Definately not as productive as roe. However, I have caught and seen many coho caught on wool.
Biggest coho my buddy or I caught this season was actually on an orange/red wool combo.

Wow..thats a beauty....would love to land one of those...im hoping to land something like this weekend if the water isnt to bad..and or the rain.Going to try my roe...Also trying to buy a new(used) rod and reel to...so hopefully it'll be a good weekend. Was that thing caught up river on the vedder..

I guess the coho see so much wool these days they get mad at seeing so much of it and snap at it out of anger. ;D ;D
They certainly donot like the roe I keep putting by them like they did in the old days. ??? :-X
-
Not to worry Chris. The Spring Jacks absolutely loved the fresh Pink roe this year.
As for the Coho, my Pink roe has fooled 14 of them this year so far.

I don't know what to say about your lack of luck this season. I saw you fishing that stretch around "sassy run" quite often and thats where I caught most of mine this season.
This particular fish was actually the first of the season. Sept.6 I believe. There's still another month or so on the north side. Still plenty of time to change your luck.

tamahi is a brutal place to fish. I put it in the same category as the Stave... full of snaggers and flossers. I've seen snagged fish landed way down out of sight. There's lots of other rapids / pocket water from Osbourne rd. and up. Most of the upper river is pocket water. You just stand and wait and you'll see what routes through the water the fish swim up. Fish the pockets on either side of the chutes.
I like using #4 Colorado blades to catch fish like these.....
