Ok...
Not sure if i should even be asking this, but I want to clear up any mis-conception about salmon tags.
I've had people tell me that I can still fish the river even if I don't have a salmon tag, as long as I don't keep any salmon.
Is this correct?
thanks
-
yes you can still fish for salmon without a tag/stamp. you CANNOT keep any salmon though unless you buy a salmon tag/stamp
-
yes hook is correct, you cannot keep but can fish.
Problem is if you deep hook a fish and kill it but dont have a tag and cannot leagally keep it.
-
thanks for the info.
i don't plan on snagging any...of course
just gonna head up the river with a few friends to see what we can catch...its been a few years.
got tired of all the gong show and stuck to lakes for quite a few years. Ready to give the rivers another chance and just go out and enjoy the coming fall.
thanks again

Salmon tag is cheap insurance. You may end up hooking one that looks fine for the BarBee ;)

Exactly!
Reserve catch and release for lake fish, not on fish that are trying to make it back to their home river to spawn... :)

Wild coho and steelhead are caught and released all the time. Not all fish are meant for the bbq

Good point.... ;D

What was said about salmon tags is correct. But I have been told that that is not the same for a steelhead tag. Namely, you are not allowed to fish for steelhead even if you plan to release all you catch unless you have a steelhead tag; is that correct?
-
yes fun pig that is correct as well
you can fish for salmon with out a tag, but need a tag to keep any. once you get your limit, you may still fish but can not keep any addition fish than your daily limit.
with steelhead you must have your tag to fish the river when they are running, doesn't matter if you are catching and releasing or even targetting another species. also, once you catch your daily limit, you must stop fishing for the day

You know, I've fished most of my 60 year old life here in BC. I try to follow all the regulations, but there are just SO many of them. I read posts on this site and 3 other favorite sites to help me figure out what is permissible and what is not, and judging by the number of posts on this site asking for advice on the regs, I know I'm not alone in my frustrations. I try to go on the provincial/federal websites to find info, but what a lost cause that is!! You can waste so many hours and the result is frustration figuring out the websites, and in the end, no info gleaned.
Do the government employees who design and post the regs on the websites actually fish?? I don't think so, and they are just doing the jobs they have been assigned to, so I don't blame them either. The provincial and federal goverments have to do a better job of providing up to date, easier to understand information regulated and supervised by fishermen. We fishermen should not have to rely on this, or other, private web sites.
Here we are in BC trying to stimulate fishing in BC for our children, younger people etc. because the number of fisherman has decreased significantly over the last decade or two and the province is spending a lot of money to garner more interest in fishing, but the regs are so convulted, ever changing, and have such a myriad of situtations that it- IMHO -prevents answering newbies or experience fisherpersons questions and is just one big black hole. Hardly condusive to stimulating fishing.
On this site, and others, there have been many posts about non-BC's ie: immigrants who break the rules. Well, if so many of us on this site are asking the most basic of questions, what chance do the immigrants have in following the regs??
OK my rant is over....

I share your frustration. Can be overwhelming at times.

Why not just get a tag as i believe it does go to a good cause :-\

thanks for the info.

Bait fishing for salmon especially coho can cause severe bleeding and deep hooking. It can be more fatal than snagging.
So really if you plan to fish for salmon. Keep what you caught (if legal) or try not to do C&R on them.

gotcha
good advice
caught some pinks today...released them.
i'm gonna buy myself a tag tonight just for good measure.
i'll probably hit the river a few more times this year cuz it was so nice and quiet.
thanks again.
