Title: Did my good deed for the day.
Post by: funpig on September 01, 2009, 11:14:01 PM
I checked out No. 3 Road after work.  No fish.  I was just in my t-shirt and shorts.  I had to leave by six because it got so cold.  I guess summer is almost over.  Anyways, I went over to Canadian Tire at Ironwood to buy some fishing line.  While I was there, there were two guys shopping for fishing rods.  Not much of a selection.  A young clerk was helping them.  One guy was keen on buying the biggest rod available.  It was a mooching rod/reel combo.   I overheard him saying that he wanted a big rod so he could catch a 30 pounder.  He sent the clerk off to check the computer to see if the rod/reel were on sale.  I then asked him if he had a boat.  He said no.  I then asked him where he planned to fish with that rod and he said off the dock at Steveston.   I then told him that he was buying the wrong type of rod.  They both had heard about the pink run and wanted to buy rods and reels to try and catch some.  I told them they would be better off buying a spinning rod/reel.  The only ones left were some six footers.  They then asked me if they should be buying 20 pound line.  I told them it was overkill.  After talking a bit more, I suggested they go over to Berry's to get a better selection.

It's kinda sad how poor of a rod selection Canadian Tire has. Army & Navy on the other hand has a great selection of just about anything you need for fishing, they're a little bit pricey though for certain things. For instance, I bought a Shakespeare "Ugly Stik Lite" medium action rod/reel combo at my local Walmart location for 39.99, and Army & Navy wanted 49.99 for just the rod, which was the light action model of mine (4-8lb line). It's always good to shop around..kudos to you funpig :)

Most local Canadian Tires suck.  I've been too a couple on the Island and in the interior that are actually pretty good though.
Army Navy is alright.  They have the best prices on lures, hooks, lines, and other terminal tackle.
But nothing beats the information and service of a small local tackle shop.

Nice job with the advice.

I prefer to shop and support the local fishing/tackle stores, Stillwater in Ladner and Berry's in Richmond.  It was getting late and Canadian Tire was on the way home and I needed the line.  I have to admit for a moment the sadistic side of me wanted to say nothing and let those two guys buy the wrong stuff.  But the nosey, know-it-all side of me got me to speak up.
