Title: IT HAS BEGUN IN VANCOUVER
Post by: searun17 on April 14, 2008, 06:29:36 PM
Well after a less than stellar season many people in vancouver have been screaming for major changes with the canucks, well the   major changes have started with the firing of GM  Dave Nonis, personally i dont know if i agree that this is the best route to go at this point but time will tell,it will be interesting to see who the new GM  will be,and does couch V keep his job.

Vigneault will likey be next since most GM's like to pick their own coaches unless they hold on to Tambelini. Doubt if that'll be the case.....Aquilini, from the word on the street, is a super control freak and will likely try to hire a puppet because he'll want to have his "say" in everything that's done.

The Swede that Nonis worked on all season to obtain, supposedly one of the better players not playing in the NHL, was going to sign a level entry contract.  This aquisition will now probably fall through because his agent really liked Nonis. He was being coveted by several teams....    Nonis all but had him. I'll be surprised now if the Canucks get him.

It's going to be an interesting few weeks!

That's a recipe for disaster in my opinion. Reminds me of George Steinbrenner.

I heard that call on the radio yesterday too, I don't think there is any validity to that comment about him being a control freak, I think that was someone pretending to be someone important making crap up !!
If that caller had really been that close to Aquilini and was as high up in the organization as he says he was... do you really think he would be on a radio program slamming his former employee ??

I have never heard anything from any other source accusing him of anything like this, from what I have heard he is a Hockey enthusiast and he loves the Canuck's, he was a long time season ticket holder and I believe he is good for this team, Nonis had his chances to improve this team last summer, everybody but him could see that the team was desperate for scoring and he did nothing about it, if the Canuck's continued on with Nonis at the helm all we would have is another defense first non scoring team next year , there are big changes that need to take place and I think getting rid of Nonis was the only way anything was going to change

my two cents 'TH

Yes ! I often wonder what the Canuck management see in this guy. He's been around for ages. Thank goodness that Mike Penney has gone to join the Leafs.

I would of liked to see Noni's get through the summer at least to let him finish his plan.  Regardless,  I just hope his replacement does not turn this team into a mess because I don't think we are really that far. I would like to see Burke back but I don't think that will happen.  I can see him going to Toronto and bringing in Noni's as his assistant GM.   How would you like to be in Burke's shoes right now?  $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.

Haven't you noticed??   It's a well known fact that to be a scout for Vancouver you had to play on the "82 Stanley Cup finalist team.  ie.  Delorme, Gradin, Snepts     And if you want to be an analyst for the Pay Per View games you have to come from the '94 team.  McLean, Ronning, Valk    LOL   Sad but true!

I agree with Biff 100% The scouting is the root of the problem. How can Delorme manage to keep job security as we watch G.M. after G.M. get handed their pink slips  ?? I managed to find an online petition to fire Ron Delorme. I signed it and encourage all to as well who feel the same way. Anyone know the name Libor Polisek ? Exactly!

I think that's the name of the guy who came by to fix my hot water heater a couple of days ago.

Please no Burke. As much as I love the guy, he should not manage a rebuilding club.

Here are our top prospects right now:

   1.  Luc Bourdon, D
   2. Cory Schneider, G
   3. Mason Raymond, LW
   4. Jannik Hansen, RW
   5. Michael Grabner, RW
   6. Pat White, C
   7. Taylor Ellington, D
   8. Juraj Simek, RW
   9. Nathan McIver, D
  10. Ilja Kablukov, LW
  11. Rick Rypien, C
  12. Mike Brown, RW
  13. Dan Gendur, RW
  14. Pierre-Cedric Labrie, LW
  15. Sergei Shirokov, LW
  16. Charles-Antoine Messier, C
  17. Mario Bliznak, C
  18. Julien Ellis, G
  19. Matt Butcher, C
  20. Kris Fredheim, D

And here are what they were like at the end of Burke's tenure:

1. Ryan Kesler

2. Jason King

3. Alex Auld

4. Kirill Koltsov

5. Cory Schneider

6. Ilya Krikunov

7. Brett Skinner

8. Evgeni Gladskikh

9. MA Bernier

10. Tomas Mojzis

11. Kevin Bieksa

12. Julien Ellis

13. Fedor Fedorov

14. Alexander Edler

15. Brandon Reid

16. Mike Brown

17. FP Guenette

18. Brandon Nolan

19. Denis Grot

20. John Laliberte

I'd prefer a GM that doesn't always have his hands in the cookie jar.... ::)

I say we keep Delmore but instead spy on whatever team is picking after us and then take whomever they're planning on selecting.

Nathan Smith 1 pick before Brad Boyes
Ryan Kesler 1 pick before Mike Richards
Luc Bourdon 1 pick before Anze Kpoitar  ::)

I wouldn't last too long as GM with the 'direction' ownership wants to go. I'm a Nonis empathyzer.

I got a call from Vancouver which surprised me after they read on this forum what I say about them. I thanked them for considering me but I said I have a good chance for the Leafs GM job as Sundin will return if I get the job. ;D ;D ;D

Sorry to have to tell you Chris but you're not in the running for the Leaves job. ;D ;D I hear the job has been offered to Brian Burke.

If what you say is true I am heart broken, that Burke would get the job over me but of course the well being of the team comes first. ;D ;D

For the sake of conversation I'd like to hear some proposals from everyone on what they would do to 'right the ship'.

I'm personally of the mindset that its always better to build from within but in the Canucks case, the cupboard is just only now starting to recover from the Brian Burke days. So with that in mind I'd would like to see deals made based on their long term reprecusions.

Some deals off the top of my head:

Cory Schnieder for T.J. Oshie.

The Blues are going to need someone to take the helm from Legace sooner rather than later. Based on this years performances, most Blues fans believe that neither Toivanen or Shwartz are capable. Schnieder is a stud in net and has huge potential, while Toivanen once had great potential now seems destined to become a backup. Oshie, is well on his way to becoming the impact winger the Canucks are in dire need of.

Kevin Bieksa + 10th overall for Zach Parise

The Devils are desperately in need of some sort of offensive presence on the blue line and as everyone here is painfully aware, the Canucks have depth to spare. While Parise was drafted 17th overall in the 03 draft, IMHO he was the 5th best player to come out of the draft (Staal, Phaneuf, Getzlaf, Vanek, Parise) and is well on his way to being a star player in the league. The 2008 draft is very comparable in terms of quality, so lets think of it as trading 10th overall + Bieksa for 5th overall which is pretty close in value and fills a need of each team.

Ok, I've taken a shot at it. Lets see what the rest of you can come up with.

Time will tell whether this is a bold or a dumb move by the Aquilini group. A guy with no management experience.

Gilles had the cohones to say the Sedin's aren't the core members of the team he wants to build. If they are a top line which I don't think they are. They are a glorified second line that will never carry this team deep into a playoff run. They just don't have that sandpaper element that it takes to do damage in the post season. I would have liked to see Nonis in action with money to spend in the offseason to shore up the top 6. That being said its nice to see someone hired outside of the fraternity mentality of the Canucks that won't be afraid to make changes (Delorme please) Only time will tell.
