Title: What's your setup?
Post by: Lumps on December 13, 2007, 04:09:20 PM
Now that we're are getting into Steelhead season, what are we using for our steelhead set ups. I know you can have many different setups but what is your favorite?

Here's mine that I use most of time,  Sage 3113M, Superba CP or my MacDonald CP, have to give both pins equal amount of time on the river! Don't want them to get jealous of each other! ;D

Cheers Lumps.

St.Riox 10'6 8-14lb medium light rod, with a 6500C3 loaded with 15lb. Very nice action to this rod.

Thompson setup is Sage 4120 with Silex Superba which is my go to reel...have had it since 4th grade (cost my dad $25 way back then in '64), mid size river setup is Sage 3113MB with either Superba or Islander Steelheader, and small river setup is either Sage 3106 or 2106 with one of those pins.   If I chuck spoons on the T I'll use my 3106 (has sliding reel seat) with  my Calcutta TE.

When the weather warms up and there's fewer anglers in the spring I plan on using my Echo 2 spey rod, Islander LX4.8, and either a Rio or Airflo Skagit system with inter-changeable tips.

for our lowermainland flows i use my custom built sage 2106B armed with the Calcutta and 12lb mono , would find it very hard to go with anything else.

G Loomis 11'4" GL2 with a Gold Islander (Big River), Rainshadow 8'6" 6-12lb Custom build with a JW Young Trudex (Small River), or for spoons a Convergence (plan to upgrade) and a Diawa Luna.

Sissy, you need to suffer more in the winter with that spey!!! ;D

P.s. I should add, when and if it warrants it, I have a custom beulah 13'6" pin rod which i'll fish with a 5"milner bearing or bushing model!!! Small systems I'll use my little lamiglass Dave Vedder pin rod 10'6",

LOL 10'6" is little?! PFFT, nothing beats fishing tiny streams with a #2 Drennan, 2 splitshot, #6 and a jensen egg.

Local flow 1409LGL and a Marquis #2, skagit line mainly.  Couple other set-ups for different waters.

10$ hub sports discount rack rod, and a abu reel, all for about a 100 bucks. Use it for salmon and steelhead, and works great.

What would be the best and longest rod for a spinning reel for river fishing with a foam float? salmon, steelie or trout.Dont want to get into a baitcaster reel picking out birdnests wasting precious time.Sure would like to know what type and size of hook or bait presentation you use too.

Spinning rod/reel setup is not ideal for float fishing in a river unless the current flow is very slow (ie. slower than walking pace). Because it lacks the free spooling feature, you would need to open and close the bail of your spinning reel several times per drift so line is fed out as the float drifts downstream. Also, the drift would not be smooth as there would be pauses at times when you feed the line out manually. This can be labour intensive, even more frustrating and time consuming than attempting to get used to a baitcasting reel.

That being said, I do use a spinning rod/reel setup for river float fishing from time to time simply because it is something different to try out. It also allows me to change up to a spoon casting setup with ease. There isn't one single best length for this purpose, as everyone has a different body height, arm length and preference on fishing style. Generally look for rods that are between 8.5 to 10.5 feet long. Shorter rods make float fishing more difficult as your float depth is limited by the rod length. Longer rods such as 10.5' allows you to drift better as it keeps more line off the water surface than shorter rods.

If birdnesting is a problem when using a baitcasting reel, perhaps the tension knob when the reel is free spooling needs to be tightened. In addition, starting with a larger float and heavier weight can speed up the learning process. As you become more familiar with your reel, you can downsize your setup and you would be amazed by how smooth the casts can be even with a very tiny amount of weight on.

If you get a spinner reel with bait runner feature it will be similar to free spooling.

I share the same gear as TH.  We swap back and forth.  He casts and then it's my turn.
And, when I cast, I have to switch to a 8' leader with a 3 ounce bouncing betty because TH likes a 10' leader. So he has to switch back to his leader.  Takes us the entire day to cover the Keith Wilson bridge.   ;D

200 or less dollar setup is sufficient enough for this type of fishing

Yeah but then you don't fish it, you just cast over my line and let me lead the way down!!! And don't b.s. me, that coffee grinder is a mitchell and worth at least $30!!!!

i have float fished quite a bit with a OKUMA EB50 bait runner.... for big trout on the Thompson. Worked as well as the average baitcaster.... just don't over fill the spool with line or it will be a mess till you've cutt some tangles out.
I've tried several "baitrunner" reels.... and that EB50 is the closest thing to a baicaster action than any i've seen and used. I may just try it this winter with an 11ft spinning rod on the stamp just for kicks.

My go-to right now is a 10'6" Lamiglass MHC-P rated 10#-20# with a Raven Classic loaded with 12#.Back-up is a Convergance 10#-20# with a G&Y Avon R.S.          In answer to troutmunchers question: my go-to spinning rod is a 10' MH rated 12#-20# (a medium action rated to 17#-18# would be o.k.) with an Okuma Epixor 40 with 12# line.As Rod said a longer rod is better for float fishing but spin rods in that length are some times hard to find/limited selection. Look for one with the reel seat a little lower on the blank than average-this helps you hold the rod higher when float fishing. As for the freespooling problem I have found for myself that it is FAR better (smoother/line stays tighter to the float) to turn off the anti-reverse and reel backwards to let out line on the drift. Try using a Gibbs #3 gold or silver colorado spinner/4" pink worm/Jensen egg(orange or pink) with peach wool.

Although I now have many different setups for many different waters, for a very long time this was my "go-to" setup up

The Ron Popeil pocket fisherman, this was a birthday gift for my first birthday in 1975. If I had a nickel for every fish this sweet rod has caught......well I could at least buy a coffee!

For now I just concentrate on the rod, considering Trophy XL 9ft Coho King but actually I rarely do rivers unless my brother takes me to one to go after coho. Im much more interested in getting a float out as far out as possible from the shore of a lake where the fish seem to be jumping just barely out of my reach.Distance casting really ! ,usually with 1/2 oz wieght on a dink float 5/8 thick ,10lb line and of couse my favorate of all da Worrmm! Ity bitty 3 inch angle or dew baby. Now thats my style !Also love using a 1 ounce egg weight with a tiny mesh filled with yellow powerbait.Rod now is a telescopic Shimano Etage te 210ml and Sedona reel and a big telecopic 8ft Browning fiberglass and large Shakesphear saltwater spin reel for the river.Rather I go for a rod that get me out very far from a lakeshore on a float than bother with river gear, baitcasters n such.Sorry forget my previous post.

For targeting smaller fish such as coho: St Croix 13' 7/8 weight spey blank custom built pin rod with either Mykiss, Raven Classic or Okuma Aventa CP reel.

For bigger fish:  Beulah 13'6" 8/9 weight spey blank custom built pin rod with Mykiss reel.

Plus assorted other baitcaster setups and spinning reel setups and fly stuff now.

My go to rod for local flows is a 9 foot Trophy light mooching rod. Paired with a Trophy winter run center pin reel. I run 15 pound main and 10 pound leader. That all combined with a nice wad of roe landed 18 Coho for me this year! It might not be a Sage but It,s a great pin set up for under $300.
