When I was on my jaunt into the States last weekend to pick up my new rig I notice a huge discepancy in the cost of gas. By far the cheapest place was Arco at $2.79 a gallon compared to others like Shell for $3.17
So you guys from the lower 48...I filled up at Arco...did I buy inferior gas? Or are they all about the same?

Whenever I'm in the States I always buy gas from Arco, and my vehicles have never run any different. It's all the same. Arco is just a smaller company with much less expenses, so they can charge less.

I consider Arco to be cheap gas. I only put chevron or 76 in my 2500 HD. It is the only gas designed and approved by Honda, GM and BMW and is the only gas with a "top tier" rating. With previous cars, I would put cheaper gas in it and after a while it would start knocking. A few tanks of Chevron later the knock would go away.

That would be compared to Canada where our friends at Chevron, Petro, Esso, etc., like to price fix and reach into our pockets because we are all reliant on our fuel sucking machines and we collectively cannot step away from our cars (me included). Backed by the Canadian Government who rake in a fortune, it's likely that the root of your issue comes down to economics rather than cheap gas down there.
Put another way, at a difference of 39 cents a gallon, or about 10 cents a litre the "gap" between your typical Canadian stations and South of the 49th parallel there is noticeable. On say a typical fill the variance is maybe $5?? A double latte at Starbucks...noticeable, but who really pays attention.
All that said, I drive a supercharged car that needs 94 Octane at 12 cents or so a litre more over 87 octane so who am I to talk!! ::)
