just wondering what you catch the most on

Where's the option for "I don't really have any luck catching coho!"
LOL... really though, I've had the most luck tossing spinners in the past. Trying to learn how to float blades though lately.

Coho = roe pigs.
-
In the yap....with a fly
-
shortfloating a Nice chunk of procured roe!
-
Spoons have produced a ton of fish, but blades, probably twice as many
-
With my special wool tie, i have never needed to use anything else. Maybe I should broden my horizons.
-
Nice gobs of cured roe for me. Although I'd like to try fly fishing for them
-
If we r talking ocean i would have to say fly. They hit and run like a train! In the river i would have to say ROE!!!!!
-
Everywhere, on the fly.

I kind of figured that your favorite bait all around is roe
-
Fly for me. I get very bored watching a float go down river. A well presented fly can actually out fish bait. Just takes time on how to do it.

using a bucktail and a 7wt fly rod doing a fast troll past the kelp beds.
it was amazing watching there dorsal fin surface and follow the lure, man do they hit hard.
in the river its all roe

Back in the day when you could buy live herring and you fished them with light limber mooching rods, single action reels without drags, and an ounce of lead out from Halfmoon Bay at Mary Is. it was an absolute blast! Unfortunately, those days are gone....no live bait, very few fish in the Strait, and too many seals. It's only a fond memory now.
Now I like to use flies/bucktails in the ocean (ECVI), big honkin blades fished off a float in slow coloured water (watching the float reminds me of chronie fishing), or flies in clearer water. Prefer not to use guts...works great but too messy. Also, I like the way coho fight when there isn't any lead in the equation...I find when you use it they tend to roll up the line a whole lot more.

Mooching live herring, what memories !
I remember when I was a kid in the 80's, we would head over to Sister's just east of Qualicum. Cruise around the island and find the pools of herring, get the old rake out and rake your own bait. Set up the old power mooch and it was double and triple headers all day long!

The good old herring rake was a must for fishing that area of Qualicum and Bowser....I still have mine at my parent's house. You'd rake your herring, put a wiggler on the hook, strip your line to the bottom of the boat, wait for the coho to ball the herring up, charge over to them in the boat, cast into the fray, and strip it in. Almost every cast was a hookup, frequently grilse but a ton of adults.
The most exciting exciting part was when the balls of herring would try and take refuge under your boat to hide from the salmon and you'd have these frenzied coho chasing every herring in sight bashing into the sides of your boat.....it was wild. :o It was this type of fishing that led into trying to get them on the fly.
Anyone have a time machine??? Cuz those were the good ol' days!

I like to short float a nice piece of roe, i also like, spoons and spinners

At the risk of sounding like I'm a distributor for Blue Fox I'll once again mention that thier #5 and #6 silver/pink or all gold Vibrax are killer. I nail them anytime of day in the slower water where no one else is catching anything unless they're "long lining" them in the face. Never waste time with boots of any kind and never snag anything.
Seems the larger lures just have a slower chop action that they just can't resist. You ever so slowly retrieve them in thier arced drift and thier extra wieght keeps them deep right where the fish are.
No messy roe to deal with and a nimble little spin casting rod is way easier on the arms and perfect for getting your presentation into tight places where the coho tend to be holding.
That's my 2 cents and we'll be out working it tomorrow in the 21 degree sunshine forcasted for Chilliwack! ;D
Cheers!
