Title: Vedder Sept 25th
Post by: mmmroe on September 25, 2007, 10:42:08 PM
Since the vedder is no secret  ::) ::) thought some would appreciate some porn. Its the first time I've hit the vedder since late steelie season, so I was planning to do some scouting. Found some nice runs. Even the the water levels were dead low I wish the vedder would keep its colour. *wishful thinking*  Well I didn't wanna fight the weekend warriors, I decided to use some of my sick hours ;) Hit the flow late around 10:00 and fished till about 1:00. hooked into 7 fish. 3 cohos and 4 jacks. Two of the hoes were hatchery but let the coho runt go and kept the another. Even though it wasn't much bigger. Also bonked two jacks and released the two others. Wasn't a bad day. Also educated a few more long floaters with 5+ foot leaders. I think its easier to convert someone when they see u hit fish in the same pool they are fishing especially if they were fishing the hole first light  ;D ;D. Short float (good) roe and you'll  have success ;D

How are you all attaching your roe to your hook. I've learned to tie the roe knot, but do you tie it directly or do you use that mesh that tackle shops sell?

Nice fish BTW.
I'll be hitting the Vedder again this Saturday hopefully... just counting the days...

How are you all attaching your roe to your hook. I've learned to tie the roe knot, but do you tie it directly or do you use that mesh that tackle shops sell?

There are several different ways that you can do this. Personally I like to carry my roe in one large piece in my bait box, and cut a small chunk when I would like to put one on the hook. I usually just thread it onto the hook a couple of times, and secure it with the bait loop/roe knot. This usually lasts about a dozen or two dozens drifts (depends on how often the fish bite, sometimes only one drift ;) ). This method requires you to cure the roe properly in advance, and I generally like to fish slower water where the current is not strong enough to rip the roe off when I retrieve it.

Some people use the roe sac tying thread to secure the roe on the hook by wrapping it several times instead of the bait loop.

The second way would be to cut them into small chunks at home, and tie them into roe bags. You can get the mesh in tacklestores like you said. This is a cleaner, more convenient way as you just have to take a roe bag out of your box everytime and thread it onto the hook. It is a great method if you like to fish faster water so the roe does not get washed away so easily. I however, don't find sacs work as well as chunks when fishing for coho unfortunately. Others may have different experiences.

I agree with rodney all I use is a bait loop, when fishing roe chunks my cure stays on just like rodney mention 10+ drifts. But I'm a roe slinger and go through roe like no other lol (just cured up 16 pounds last night haha) But that should do for a awhile ;)

Will those cured roe from tackle shops work as good as those roe that you guys cured personally?  Just wondering.

I hooked two jacks and a few more pinks by the roe I just bought from RFT for the previous outing. It certainly works but how well compared with those by "homemade" recipes... I don't know.

Hope this helps.

Yes they do work but not of the same quality as you cure them yourself. Expensive too.
