Title: I need a bit of advice on location...
Post by: wheresmybobber on September 25, 2007, 09:10:20 PM
Hey everyone,

I have been watch'n this site for way to long and finallly took the next step and signed up as a forum member...

I'm a new salmon fisherman to these parts and need some help... everyone keeps reporting on the veddar, chillawack, cheakamus, and upper fraser and i have no clue how to access these rivers.

I'mn sure there are drop in points all over the place, but where does one start???

The catch my 8 years old daughter loves to fish, shes had her fill of Pinks as of I, now we want to get into Coho, Springs etc... Where is a good location, for those who want to keep their secret spots (just point me to an access point) we will hike to get away from the GONG shows I have seen on some of the bars in the Lower Fraser.

Any help would be appreciated. We live on the shore plan to head out on Friday.

Thanks

Dave

Well for the vedder river right now basically any where you can wet a line is a good bet. What I did when I first started fishing that river and didn't know any spots was park at one of the more easy accessible spots, just cause its easy to find. Then walk and find water to yourself.

Go to Fred's Tackle in Chilliwack, which is just before the Vedder Crossing bridge, and ask for a map of the area.  I assume that they still have them and it was what I used to learn the river.  The map has most of the names of the common access points and is a great resource for those new to the area.  You might also be able to search this forum or even the internet to get a copy on line.

Thanks guys...

With a little one (8 yr old) with me, and not wanting to deal with a GONG show of people would you suggest any one spot that has moderate access and wont be completely packed with a 1000 bottom bouncers...

Cheers,

wheresmybobber, because there is a kid involved so it is difficult to provide the appropriate advice. The Chilliwack River gets busy, but there are spots where hardly anyone fishes. The disadvantage is that most of these secluded spots are harder to access, and can be dangerous to an 8 year old so all precautions should be taken. My recommendation for you is to stay in the Lower River and part of Mid River. The upper sections (from around Tamahi and upstream from there) are narrow, with faster current, larger rocks, not recommended for kids at all. The lower sections, although the more easily accessed, visible spots get crowded, there are spots in between these that are lightly fished. My suggestion for you would be to park either at Lickman Road, Peach Road, Bergman  Road, railway bridge and take a walk upstream or downstream on the trail and see if you two can find a quiet spot. Yesterday, I was quite pleasantly surprised that we were the only people fishing our run. There were about 10 people downstream from us, and a couple dozens at the two runs above us. Sometimes small channels that look unproductive are actually where you should be fishing for coho. :)

They are forecasting 15 to 25mm of rain on Thursday, so be very careful. The river may actually not be fishable on Friday (higher, dirtier water). Chris or I will report the condition on Thursday evening.

Good luck!

Just wanted to thank everyone for the help...

We tried a few spots mid, but was a bit too much work, water had colour, was up from the rain...

Peach and Bergman where busy, so we ended up at Railway... found a bar all to our selves and a great bit of water that everything was pushing up through. The down side we found this spot with a few hours left in our day. BUT.

We ended up getting into a bunch of fish in short order... 2 Jacks came home, 1 Coho released. My daughter got both Jacks!!! She was over the moon. We both brought a couple more fish each to the shore before they spit/broke off...

Lots of Pink everywhere.

We did see a freaking whale come up through this bit of water!

Enjoy the weekend.

Glad you and especially your daughter had a good day. Exploring maybe time-consuming, there are definitely locations on the Chilliwack River where quality fishing could be had (note, quality, not quantity). It really depends on what one's objective is. With the water level higher, your fishing location does not affect the fishing result as much since fish would be moving through at any given time.
