I look forward to heading out to the vedder and other local rivers for some silver action. I plan to fish a lot more on the fly this year. I also look forward to the chum fishery that is very close to starting. Targeting them on the fly right when they're fresh out of the ocean is good fun, plus they are a great way to get people into salmon fishing, seeing as they are a wee bit bigger than the pinks.
Good luck to all, and i look forward to hearing your reports.

Given how miserable fishing has been the in the salt for Coho don't expect much-looks even worse than last year. :'(

Where abouts are you talking about? I have heard the opposite from people I know on the west coast of VI who say it has been much better than in past years.

Ya sam its not that bad of a year i dont think. Theres actually a decent amount in the georgia straight even and its been dead there for the last 5+ years and reports are sayin they are pretty much all over, cross our fingers

LOL!!!
The guys you've been talking are doing so because Spring action has been so off/on/off.
According to your pal Iron Noggin fish on the outside are 'starving' because of lack of feed-he posted that on BCfishingreports.
That may have some basis in fact because Coho on the Outside are not the size they have been years past-8# is called large this year where as in past years it was so/so.
Yes there are more fish Inside but nothing like years past, lotsa bait though all kinds.

The Coho I got in Port Alberni last weekend was approximately 6 pounds and had a large head and very skinny body.
-
The fish I've landed so far have been very healthy... Not a runt in the lot.
Cheers,
Nicole

Nicol , you've caught Coho and Chum in the local flows ? or are you talking about the wcvi ?
-
coho only, local yes ;)
They are around... Just focus on where the pinks are... I will be out this weekend!

Nicole

One of the creel survey guys told me the commercials got 560,000 cohos last year up from 10,000 ten years ago, I don't where he got his figures but it would sure explain the slow coho fishing the last couple of years. He also told me that there were no records as to how many were hatchery and how many were wild or anything like that, I wish I knew why this wasn't more of a concern to sports anglers or at least more common knowledge. On the bright side those chums don't seem to be a primary commercial target yet so bring em on, my rod needs a bending.

Go to albion test fishery, look under commercial catch statistics , pick year and salmon by district in pieces at bottom of page. Recreational catches also can be found at this site.

I love coho :) Can't wait to start searching for them. Maybe this weekend. ;)
-
I agree with Nicole! Ther are lots of coho this year and big ones too. All indications to me are that it's going to be a good year for them everywhere.

So, where do you go for Coho's and Chum's?
-
Coho is already in the Vedder now. Chehalis will be a little bit later. Norris Creek trails after Chehalis. But in all, October will see more coho and mid October on will be chum paradise, and chum will be everywhere, including the Stave. But Squamish system has the freshest chum. Good luck.

CHUM!!?? Are you kidding me? that's not fish!
j/k .. :D

we encountered excellent and typical numbers of big chunky well fed coho in the southern waters of Nootka on the WCVI. I am not sure if all the late summer coho are just nootka area fish or not but there did not seem to be any runty fish in the lot.... and LOTs of bait around even with the mackeral hordes being present... here's to hoping we get enough to entertain the masses locally in the LM area

I went out on a scouting mission yesterday and walked from the confluence of Cheakamus at the Squamish up to the two lane bridge looking for some good holes. It is amazing how much a river changes from year to year. Also walked around the mouth of the Mamquam. Actually saw a couple real moldy chum that must have entered the river a little to early on the Cheakamus. Saw some rolling chum around the mouth of the Mamquam, not many around just yet.. There are some in there, just itching for some chum and coho on the fly. Hopefully get some hoes on the fly on the stamp tomorrow.
