This happened to me a few years ago. Drove for two hours to get to the Vedder, fished for about 20 min. fish on and to the beach. Was only about 6:30 or so a.m. !0-12lb. hatchery, only my second ever. Was with my buddy. Do I keep the fish and fish for several more hours or kill it and stop for day! What would you do? It was a tough decision.
-
Let it go, Keep fishin' I've done it a few times this year...
-
Let me try to answer that by asking a question: How many times have you released a fish (for whatever reason) and never had another bite the rest of the day ? Difficult decision indeed. If your intent is to bring home a fish especially if you drove 2 hours to get to the river, I would be inclined to bonk it. As they say, one in the hand is worth two in the bush.

True that. 2 out of 3 times for me the one I brought to hand and released was all I tailed that day.

I have bonked one early before, and then I spent the rest of the day fetching my activity partners coffee, and taking naps in the truck etc ;D ;D ;D most of the time I will release any fish Hatch or wild if I get it early, I drive 1-1/2 hours in and I aint leaving after a few minutes

I dont keep steelhead so its an easy amswer for me..
-
Pose for a photo, release it, and keep on fishing, good Karma ;D
-
I don't fish for food so I would release it and continue fishing ... actually landing one is a by-catch of what I am really there for :)
A peacefull day on the river.
-
If you do release that fish and continue fishing your attitude will be a lot diffrent for the rest of the day. If you get nothing later
you still weren't skunked. If you catch another fish later now your two for the day and happy trails to you. 8)

if its a doe and i am going to get some beauty skiens outa her then she's good as dead but unless its that prize specimen its goign back.
PS - I just finished smoking the steelhead I bonked last week end and I wasnt impressed with the flesh quality...a little softer than I like an no where as nice as my vaccum packed sockeye and red spring (that I am still going thru). it was a chromer too.

if me i will fish more and more althought hasnt got one yet !

It sure was nice when you could keep two fish per day. You could kill one and still keep fishing. Too bad the river is so crowded now that the rules needed to be changed. I might keep one steelhead per year. But only if I'm in the mood for a fresh fish. They don't taste nearly as good as salmon, so I'm usually more inclined to release all fish caught. Steelheading is about the experience, not filling the freezer............

Kill it then go to the chehalis for another..
:D

I don't know about BC Rules, but in Washington, that would usually be a violation of your daily limit.

I was just playing, but for the record, you are allowed 2 hatchery steelhead a day in the region.. so it IS legal.

depend on the size for me ;) and gender

Johnny is correct. It is legal.

yeah 2 hatchery steelhead a day, on 2 different systems , once you bonked one you have to pack up and leave and you can go to another river for another one...
So.... if your allowed 2 per day, can you bonk one at the vedder go home drop it off and head back out to the vedder ??? how is anyone going to know..
You are not allowed to do that as that is double dipping. Just like when sockeye season is open people go get their two fish drop them off than go and get another two. Its against the regulations. People break the regs all the time, which is wrong.
-
You have to tag the fish marking down the river that you got it and the date. Once you do that, would you really want to risk going back to the same river system for another?
If you go to the Chehalis, you will then tag the fish as being caught in the Chehalis.

I spoke to DFO about this specifically. FF you are right in that you are allowed 2 steelies a day in region 2...last year you could have retained 2 on the seymour or one from two single daily limit rivers like the vedder and chehalis. You are also right in saying it could be a dicey situation if you get stopped and checked. They advised me I would need to be able to prove the origin of each fish ie a photo taken at a recorgnizable location on each river.

Photos could be easily doctored as simple as changing the date on the camera.

If I am not mistaken, hunting licenses have to be cut out. This way, you cannot erase the record after you get home!!!
-
You could use ink that turns invisable and never worry about anything ::). There,s not enough jails for BAD fisherpersons IMO. :(
-
Heavy fines! And by the NATURE of stealheaders we should never have to worry about ethics! ;)
-
I got a beauty a little while ago and had this exact thing happen.
My answer is.
BONKKKKKKKKK!!!!!!!!!!! ;D

In conclusion, after debating for a minute as I held it in the water, I decided to let it go! We fished for the rest of the day and then at about 4 oclock that afternoon I caught another one as luck would have it and as it was a hatechery as well, I kept it. To demonstrate even more good fortune, my buddy caught another just minutes later using the same white worm, his was also a hatch, so we both went home with our steelies! So it paid off at least that time for both of us! The steelie gods were smiling on us!

Very nice Bigguy...Karma strikes again!
