Sound groovy and a fun event. I would suggest we fish in pairs with the team with the heavist weight taking home the $. It might be fun to draw for fishing partners but only a suggestion. We could meet at Tims at Lickman or Cookies as they open at 5:30 for breaky and  away we go. Supper out?

Only my suggestions and will let the organizers decide final details.

I will offer up 2 dozen golf balls, used of course and a Maple Leaf Stealth and Maple Leaf Drennan also as prizes, I hope this does effect the entries. ;D ;D ;D

Nice idea fellows.

While it is Highly unlikely this Island Lad could make it over for such a Derby, rest assured many of us trapped over here on The Rock will be fishing that day  ;)

Would love to attend, and it sounds like a right fine outing! Good Luck with the organization, and of course the fishing! I'll post the results we encounter over here the same day in Lotus Land for you to peruse  ;D

Cheers,
Nog

Cohokid, whenever we have had a fish in we have always cut the fishing out by twelve so that we still have time to get together and have a BBQ, if you start at first light it will give you 5 plus hours to get into some Steel ! and after the BBQ is over you are welcome to fish some more :)

I am really looking forward to getting together with all the people from this site, it would be great if we could get a good number of fisherfolk out for this derby! Fishfreak I like you're idea of getting the wives involved.. it will make things run smoother for sure.. you're tent sounds great, I am sure that between us all we can get everything together that we need, I am going to work on getting some other prizes donated also...

I'm in if I can adjust my schedule.... I'd have a buddy coming as well. Are you guys sure you wanna end it by noon??? With less than 50 people it wouldn't take long to wrap things up if it ended around 2 or 3... just a thought.

regardless,
I can donate a couple prizes... a 10ft 6 drift rod maybe..... a buck filet knife maybe..... some steelhead tackle maybe.... email me for details.

lastly.... ya sure you don't wanna make it for a tuesday ;D ;D that's my lucky day

im in rick,i thoght the idea of chris was good draw names for partners, this way you get to meet new guys, and im pretty sure everybody on the site, or atleast in the derby knows all the spots,or atleast good ones. i can donate a filet of red nootka sound spring for lunch, ill prepare it so it will just need to be cooked derby day. also i like the money idea, half to vedder river enhancement, half to the winners. another idea is get it catered, hot dogs , hamburgers. then the person running the stand gets there percentage, and the other percentage goes to whatever, little less organizinging, to get enough volunteers to cook might be challenging.
Title: Re: FWR Steelhead Derby
Post by: Big Steel on December 28, 2006, 08:07:04 PM
Actually, you know what?  I think the name drawing is a great idea as well.  I don't know how many people would go for it, mainly because you will never be able to pry some guys from their fishing partners!!  COUGH*Flyguy*COUGH  Also, I have no idea how the Freak would make out as a partner for someone else, I just recently got used to his weird smell and constantly asking me to come over to have a look at "something"!!  Trust me, if this idea is done, and you get Freak as a partner, just stay at least 10 feet away and don't look directly at him and you will be fine!! ;D ;D

But seriuosly, I think this idea should be given more thought, or even a poll done for it!! :)

Just to keep everyone up to date....

The starting point will be Tim Hortons on Lickman Road.. Registration for our event will be between 6-6:30 am, entry fee will be $20, we will be fishing as singles ( you can fish with a group if you like ) no partners at weigh in :) All Hatchery Steelhead that are to be entered must be at the weigh in by 1pm this is the cutoff time !

I am hoping we will have volunteers to run the weigh in tent, if this is the case we will have prizes for first fish entered, smallest fish , biggest fish 2nd and 3rd and maybe a secret weight also :) I am hoping that we can raise enough prizes so that all the entry fee money can be donated !!

There will be a potluck BBQ at Cedar Run starting at around 1pm so I am hoping that everyone that enters can bring some sort of food stuff !! please send me a pm telling me what you can bring or just post it on this thread, I think I can bring my BBQ but another one would be good, we will need tables and chairs and coffee and hopefully a generator,

I am looking forward to this event :)

A couple of questions for all those that are coming, does anyone have a generator? does anyone have another BBQ? does anyone have a propane outdoor burner?

We are also going to need tables and maybe chairs, Fishfreak is bringing a tent for the weigh in but another tent could be useful especially if the weather is not so nice! I am also trying to find out if there are any non fishers that will be able to donate some time to help set up the food and weigh in areas, I am thinking that all those that are bringing hot food can somehow get it to the weigh in area a little before 1pm .. just a few thoughts!! if anyone can think of things I am forgetting please let me know, I would also appreciate it if you could e-mail or PM me and let me know what kind of food you will be bringing
THX Rick

Just so everyone knows the entry money from this derby will be going to the Chilliwack River Foundation I think thats the right name I am sure I will be corrected if I am wrong! The money will be given most likely to Chris Gladsen to be distributed properly :) I a hoping that enough prizes will be donated so that we can give the entire sum of all entry fees to the cause :) I am still working on a nice first place prize and I am thinking a nice gift certificate to a tackle shop such as Reaction would be a nice prize for the top fsh !!!!
If I cannot get this as a donation I will likely take some of the entry fees to get this certificate!! I have learned from a good source that we will have propane burners available to heat up the soup and hot water and such so a generator may not be needed after all

although i don't agree with derbies, especially on steelhead, the choice of charities is a good one and good on you for that, i would suggest looking into possible insurance coverage???   ask the Boxing Day Derby people if you may need it

I will look into it, but I can't see why we would need it cept for maybe someone choking on a piece of hotdog or something.. ;). the actual time on the river fishing wouldn't have anything to do with derby I wouldn't think, just a day on the river like most days, but I will look into it just to be safe

I'll volunteer if I get a ride - won't have a vehicle.  Am looking forward to it - Thickrick....  if you can let me know if I can hitch with you then I'll mark my calender.  I'll do whatever - but can't guarantee the cooking skills.

Good Luck everyone - sounds like great prizes....

Hey TR - two questions... first, is there a list of stuffs we want/need for the BBQ?  Second, seeing that I'm new to the vedder, I'm not sure where the 'Cedar Run' is - could you splain, Lucy?  Or post/email me the google earth local? (that IS where the BBQ is going to be, yes?)

I'll bring garbage bags, chopped onions, ketchup, mustard and Relish.  Don't think I'll be there all afternoon for the whole BBQ, so someone will need to volunteer to haul out the full garbage bags.

Well, it is easy to get to, just cross the tamahi bridge and keep going up river.  Ceder run is just a bit past Allison pools.  There is a big parking area there infront of the dyke, and I don't think you could miss all of us!!  There will more than likely be a tent and a weigh in station as well!! ;D

Great offerings Scouterjames !! I will have my pickup there so I will be able to take away the garbage, BigSteel gave you pretty good directions to the Cedar Run .. there will be a tonne of cars parked and I will look into putting up a sign on the road so those who have never been there will be able to find it

Timmies on Lickman is on the northside of Hwy 1.

Cedars is above Tamihi.  As you drive up, a little before the prison (on your left) you will see a large pullout on the side of the road where there will be many cars parked.  Go over the embankment and there is a large open area for the gathering.  If you're at the prison, you've gone too far.

Hopefully, it's not too late to get on board.  I didn't think I was going to be around that weekend but now I will be.  Because I didn't think I would be, I haven't been up to the river at all to see all the new changes.  I 'll probably be headed up on my own, as well.

The main reason for attending is to get a chance to meet some of you guys....maybe I'll be able to buddy up with someone at Timmy's.  If not, no big deal.  I'm sure I'll run into people ALL over the river.  Unless I stay really close to the cedar run to keep an eye on the food.  Keep it safe from bears and all that.

If you're still looking for prizes I could donate a sample of 20 "tried and true" lake fishing flies from the mastercaster's box.  I'll bring a homemade, from scratch I might add, chocolate cake.....secret family recipe so don't ask for it.  haha

Also, Rick,  could you e-mail me because after reading your guy's thread on weight training I want to talk to you about getting some supplements from you.

rln that is very very very generous of you and you can be sure that it will be much appreciated by all that enter the derby !!!
I want everyone that is entering to know that I will be handing out tickets to the entrants when they give me the $20 entry fee, so it is important that you make it to the Tim Horton's on Lickman before 6:30 am.. I will be there before 6 and I will most likely stay there until around 7am , but I am also fishing that day and would like to be able to get out to the river for a couple of hours also :) so the earlier you can get there the better !! We are handing out prizes for the top three fish and the earliest entered , there are some excellent prizes to be won including a drift rod and a centerpin reel, Labour for a custom rod build as well as many lures..and much much more !!! I am donating a really nice Jacket by Stormtech that is worth around $130 .. so as you can see the prizes are quite spectacular methinks  ;D ;D ;D I will also be handing out raffle tickets to those in the derby when you arrive for the BBQ and weigh in, so even if you don't catch a fish you will have a great chance at winning something anyways  ;D in the case that there aren't enough fish enetered in the Derby we will be raffling off all the prizes so don't think that you're $20 entry fee will be wasted!! you will still have an excellent chance of winning something !!!!

see you soon !!

anyone that is donating a prize for the derby ..... could you please try and drop off the prize at the Cedar run sometime during the day in advance of the 1 pm deadline so that I will have time to put together the prize packages for the winners !! THX  ;D ;D ;D
Here is a pic of the Jacket I am donating
I bought it in Large so it should fit most people , and if it doesn't I guess you can trade it with someone else  ;D

Rick, vat of coffee, cups, cream and sugar is $65. I could have asked for a donation of it but would feel bad doing it as we have our cleanup the following week. Each cleanup they provide at least one vat, muffins and donuts so could not ask to get it for free, sorry.

Do you have enough funds for me to order it, if so what time do you want it ready, 6 am so it can go up to the Cedars then or do you want me to bring it up for 1 PM?. Let me know please.

$65 is fine Chris, I think it would be good to have it at the Cedar run by around 11 am or so , that way any early entries, and the volunteers can enjoy a nice hot cup of joe  :) Thx alot for taking care of it Chris !!

Things I have used in events like this that sometime helps get acquainted is a name tag. Maybe it is because at my age one becomes forgetful. I will bring some in case we want to use them. Of course I will not need one as I will be the only one with a Leaf's hat. O, wait a minute, after we beat Vancouver the night before there will be a few wearing them, especially FA. ;D ;D ;D

The money raised is going back into the river. How is that a steep price? Its more like a donation than a price....How many times a year do you fish this river? If you fish it more than twice a year I would say its a small price.

hmmm, I thought $20 was a very reasonable price especially when there is approx $1000 worth of prizes to be won and it includes a BBQ  ;D ;D not to mention every penny is going back into the river

Kingpin, you are welcome to fish with myself. I think I might be fishing with *Lil Fisherman* also, but he`s been out tomcatting ;) and I haven`t talked to him for a while.

Anybody who wants to fish with someone else feel free to post, I`m sure someone will hook up with you. This derby is for a good cause and we should all try and make sure as many people can attend.

Cheers

I think it's a great price for A - what we're getting with the derby (incl the prizes and BBQ) and B - raising funds for not only a great cause, but one that is important to all of us on this forum!  Heck, as far as donations go, it's not even THAT steep!

If it hasn't been mentioned enough (even if it has!) TR, thanks for all your hard work organizing this!

I've got a suggestion

what about donation ?

so like people who isnt willing to pay $20 can pay $10 but people who wants to donate and have more money can give $30

so people will not be like " omg i have to pay this thing alot "

coz its called donation and should not be forced

well it is just my opinion..

Here's why that won't work...because while it's a great idea in therory, there are always those who ABUSE it....This is a fun event put on by guys on here who aren't rich but who bust their asses at jobs all day  and yet are going way out of their own ways to volunteer money, time and effort.....THis isn't the Canadian government and a welfare raffle...Not trying to be a prick but come on..enough of this B.S. already!!

Good on you Xg, I agree totally. I mean come on, 20 bucks for such a great cause and not even including all the extra time and effort
put in by volunteers, TR, Chris and  lots of other people. Like last night I was thinking it should actually be like 30 bucks considering the prizes and food included, I mean it costs 65 just for a vat of coffee. Maybe Xg and myself are the only ones that think this way but I doubt it. I am so looking forward to this event and you know what lifes full of choices, if you are not able to afford it or think its too high a price then I respect your decision. I know where I'll be, out having fun and meeting new friends, Hope to see you there.

Coffee ordered this am as well as 3 dozen donuts. Will picked up and deliver to the site by 12 noon.

The owner of all the Tim Hortons here in the Wack asked when I was going to take him steelhead fishing, I did not know he even fished. Has only hooked one after a few years of trying. I guess I should have invited him to the event and we could have had all the donuts and coffee we wanted. ;D ;D ;D

By the way he is a Leaf fan also. ;D ;D

Yes do not forget to come by on friday. Drive to the back of the building and back up the ramp to the metal gates. The wood will all be boxed so that it will not reck the inside of your car. Also remind me to give you your jigs that I tied up for you.

Hey there Riverman, hav'ent seen you since July when I met you at our secret spring hole. How you doin? The Cedar Run is just past the Tamahi bridge heading east or toward the hatchery. Continue past Allison Pools and it's on the left hand side and has quite a large spot to park vehicles. If you've went to the corrections prison area then you've went to far. Anyways I'll see you in the morning and
give you a little more info. By the bye did you make it to the Chehalis this winter, I did'nt see you. Anyways see you Sunday ;).

The area outside Tim Horton's and Best Western is quite large so I assume people will probably meet there instead of packing 50 fishermen inside Timmies. Perhaps Rick can tell all what vehicle he is driving and all can meet in front of it?

Drove 2 min up the road to a more sheltered area put one cast in and my day was done. Water is still crappy with mabey a foot of vis at best had to fish above to croosing today which sucks but It payed off with 2 pounds of fresh Jam for derby day.

ok stupid question time.Seeing that I am not a coffee fan let alone a Tim Horton's fan, What side of the freeway is the Tim Horton's at Lickman road? I usually turn off at the Yarrow exit so I have never been there. Just incase I can make it on sunday and would like to enter this derby.

North side of Hwy 1.

For those who are coming in from Vancouver, take the Lickman Road Exit from Hwy 1. Make a left turn at Lickman Road. Cross the overpass, you should see Tim Horton's and Best Western Hotel on your left at the traffic light.

Just a note to people going to the derby, I'll be bringing 3 or 4 centerpins made by Hope craftsman Don Campbell for sale. If you've got an extra $250.00 in the cookie jar bring it along you might see something you like. I'll see if I can bring acouple with bearings and a couple with bushings. I'm fairly sure one of Don's reels  is gonna land the winning fish. ;D ;D ;D ;D (mine that is)

On top of that I will be donating 10 of my marabou steelhead jigs in various colours that I have just finished tying up.

Let's keep all discussion in this thread. I've put the derby prize thread on the top of the board and locked it. Thickrick can modify it if more prizes need to be added:

http://www.fishingwithrod.com/yabbse/index.php?topic=13326.0

Also, please keep the chatting to minimal. We are at 18 pages now, it makes it difficult for others who are interested joining to follow what exactly is happening.

Thanks all.

SO I hope that you guys like fish, I just prepared some Red Spring in a redwine/cracked pepper marinade.  Then followed it up with a buch od Sockeye in a Garlic/herbs marinade.  I'll let it soak in that for a couple hrs, then wrap it all up in tin foil packages ready to go on the BBQ!!  Should take 20 min or so to cook!! ;)

But looking at it now, not sure if it is enough, so I just took out some more Red Spring.  Hoping it will defrost by the time I go to bed tonight, and I will bring along some garlic butter to cook it with!! ;D

Dont over cook the fish, remember when you take it off the BBQ it will continue to cook its self

Dude, I have cooked fish about a million times, including cooking it for 20 people the last 4 Christmas's.  But that matter's not, because I doubt that I will be cooking it!! ;D ;D

Count me in Rick.  I think it's finally time for me to experience stealheading and this might be a good day for it.  I say i'm gonna try every year, but this year i actually bought a tag  ;D  The Freak has been persuading me to attend the derby for the last 2 weeks and i finally gave in  :P  I've been fighting a cold this week, but it ain't gonna stop me from going.  I'm gonna bundle myself up and keep warm...........i even bought one of those "Rodney" flappy ear touques.  Might bring me some luck  ;)  Looking forward to this outing and to meet new members.  Good luck all and enjoy this event and be safe.

I'll bring some steelhead tags, just incase someone forgot.

Prawns are soaking in steelie pink procure as I type ;D

And Chris, you may want to bring some ear plugs tomorow as the Leafs just couldn't pull it off. Be prepared to hear about it ;D

Hi Sandy, I'm not sure if Rick will have a sign up, but you should be able to see lots of cars parked on the side of the road. The fire is probably not visible as there is a very short walk through the woods (15 seconds?) to it. As you drive up the river, you'll cross Tamahi Bridge, then continue up the road, you should be able to spot the area just a few minutes after Alison Pool.

Correct me if I am wrong please people, so everyone knows where to go.

Have a great day and take care on the road. :)
