Title: lining a centerpin

 I just got a new centerpin for my B-Day and was just wondering how you would put the line on it. Do you spool it like you would a levelwind or a flyreel with dacron backing. Ive did a google search and found a couple different answers. Back east they seem to spool half the reel with backing and half with mono. Just wondering what some of you perfer. I spool mine with backing and 12 lb. mono

I think it mostly depends on the depth of the spool.Deep ones like the islander get backing so you don't have to spool  up 350 yds of mono to fill the reel.Shallower ones such like the okuma aventa fill up with about 200-250 yds.I have a shallow spool avon and just spool with 12# mono.

I always use backing on my Centrepins.

An "old timer" told me about this when I bought my first Centrepin. It is something to do with not cracking the drum (I don't know how it works). Since then, I have always put backing on my reels, regardless if the new Centrepins will not crack or warp.

It saves a bit of money on line when it is time to re-spool the mono.

If you use backing on your c-p what is the best knot to use to join your mainline to the backing

Double Nail Knot. I would use backing on a larger reel, but i don't on my Trudex. And if you don't like losing floats use 15lb, you'll lose way less gear. By the way, Maxima Chameleon is the way to go for pin reels.
