Hello, I am a high school teacher in North Surrey. I am starting a fishing club and was wondering if any of you guys had any idea of where I should take the kids? I was planning on taking them fishing once a month and meeting every 2nd week to learn how to tie knots. flies etc... I would like to make it to the Squamish for the chum run in early November but other than that I have no ideas. I would preferably like to take them to locations within a short driving distance of Surrey Central City station.
Your input will be greatly appreciated. :)

Sorry Cohokid, I'm down the road at Kwantlen Park. Are there any bars to fish for salmon on the incoming tide near the Patullo bridge?
-
Dan, several suggestions:
Send an email to Jeff Weltz, who's also a forum member here (newsman) as he has had experience on this. keta@kendryl.net
I would recommend that you phone up the Fraser Valley Trout Hatchery, talk to Natalie and possibly plan out a field trip to the hatchery for half a day. The hatchery includes a visitor learning centre, which has amazing aquarium setup with BC native fish species. http://www.gofishbc.com/fvh.htm
Possibly a trip to either the Chilliwack or Seymour River hatchery?
These are more like educational excursion. As for fishing, Squamish is one option, but all need waders. Stave River is another one, Jeff used to take his kids there for lessons.
I have more info, but dinner is ready, will post more later.

Birdman you go to Walnut Grove, hahahahah i use to go there when i was younger use to stir up the whole town at night with a bunch of friends then got booted out of there, maybe thats why i got sent to military school lol
that explains everything :D

oh you guys have no clue about grove, 12 years ago or so was a total hood that town so much bad crap went on, as everyone grew up and moved out its allot better now, millions of people at the mac gas station all night picking fights with people , i never hung out there casue i didnt get along with anyone, the complex on the corner accross the street from the macs, the cops were in there all night so much crap went on in there it was rediculous , and i use to live in there, some of you think its so tough now in grove , nothing compared to back in the day
Too True,
I was around back in the day about 9 years ago....the grove has gotten ALOT better since those days. FF I doubt we ever met, but I hear ya on the ol' Grove days. I'm from the other side of the freeway, but used to hang out there some weekends......the tims/wendys was the favortite for my crowd every Fri night for the races....Boy were we stupid back then. Lucky to be alive today
-
Shane,
Yes, the races were the good times.....some sweet cars for sure!
As fun as it was, we were so yound and stupid......I don't know how many times I should be dead, and countless more times seeing others almost bite it.....Young and stupid, but yeah...fun and some good/crazy memories.
-
BTW:
For any of the young guy's reading this. From someone that lived through it, and I'm sure Shane will agree.....trust us......STREET RACING IS NOT WORTH IT! As much fun as we had back then, it WAS PURE STUPID! DON'T DO IT!
PLEASE whatever you do, don't interpret the trip down memory lane some of us are having as condoning the stupidicy of street racing.
Just in case anyone was confused or concerened about my position on this.

Shane, I was just posting a note to appologize for the highjacking myself.
Enough about this, back to the original topic :)

"IT WAS REALLY REALLY FUN GUYS... BUT DON'T DO IT!"

Youngin,
I see how that could sound ironic, my point was this: (Even though you're quote was not an exact quote, I understand the intent behind it)
Of course in the moment as young idiots we had fun.....as we grow up and have the benifit of a little (emphasis on a little) more maturity, we realize how stupid that "Fun" really was.

I know in Maple Ridge the pricipal at Garibaldi secondary had a fishing club. He is now the principal at Adult Education so I do not know if he still does it but he sure had alot of fun doing it. He is an avid fly fishermen as well as drift and he enjoyed passing on his knowledge to the kids. Now for those that go to North Surrey secondary you may want to talk to the chef at the cafeteria or Mr. Chow your Vice Principal they both love to fish especially your chef. Maybe they can get something started. I know that they love to go to the squamish. To the teacher from Kwantlum park Secondary I hope that you get your fishing club to a good start I know that the kids there would appreciate it as some of the kids may not be able to get out to enjoy the outdoors without people like you. Good luck and tight lines.

if only my school in richmond had a fishing club...
-
Just start talking to people or ask your principal if you can start one. They will ask the staff members at the next staff meeting if anyone would be interested in sponsoring the club(looking after it). Who knows maybe there is a staff member that loves to fish but never thought that the students would be interested. It does not hurt to try.
-
I don't think anyone else in my school would be interested :P

I remember the Garibaldi club, 1st year out and they walked away with best team trophy at, the last Fraser Valley Middle & High School Fly Fishing Championship. Now if you want a club at your school, Here's an insider tip. Get your parents to band together with a bunch of other parents and have them start pressuring the admins at your school and your school board office. Pulling the taxpayer card works!

Or play the race card if all else fails :D
