I'm going to have 1 day to fish up near Yellowknife next Saturday. Any suggestions? Where? What? What with?
-
While I have never fished Yellowknife, I think the terrain is quite similar to Fort Nelson and the areas north of there. I fished that region for several summers and I think you have a number of choices. Target species is grey ling, dolleys & bull trout, Northern Pike, walley if you are lucky.
I fished at 4 species off of one rod, a 6 foot fiberglass rod the was very slow action but impossible to break. I think I had 10lb line on it and that served me well.
If I was targeting greylings, then I would try an ultra lite spinning rod or fly rod, obviously the larger species need larger rods! How much room do you have to pack gear?
Fortunately for you there were a couple of lures that I caught all the larger species on: 5 of diamonds by lehn Thompson (yellow spoon with 5 red diamond - like a red devil) and then yellow or white mister twisters. We had a trip for walley and pike where those 2 lures killed them. I have had goo luck on the 5 of diamonds for lakers too.
I found that with the limited pressure up north and minimal encrochment on the rivers and lakes, most water held fish of some sort...it really was quite exciting to just pull over and take some casts, you would never know what youre going to hook!
any more specific questions, just riffle them off.

I fished either Jackfish lake or Frame lake right in town. Big old wolverine spoon was recommended, I used a smaller spoon (like one of rods pink salmon spoons) and got a big ol' pike. I thought I snagged a weed and was reeling it in when about half way it woke up. It was about 30 inches.
If you are going to a bed and breakfast or just going for brunch stop in at Maries Tea Room (I think thats the name) and talk to Wayne. He gave me lots of good local tips and almost got me hooked up with a fishing trip... Too bad it was at the same time as my wedding ::)
Good luck and have fun. Also if you get a chance to fish near yellow knife, the mouth of the YK river is just about 20km, and supposed to have lots of nice walleye, but I didn't get any, and only saw lots of grizzly tracks.

Thanks for the info guys. I'm working up on the Con mine site Wed-Fri up there, and then due to flight timing issues, I'm not leaving until 1500 on Sunday. I'll try to get a tube for flight before I head up.
Definitely welcome any other tips :)

What are you looking for at this point? There have been suggestions on equipment and even specific tackle, places to eat, etc...so what are you looking for now?
-
Gooey,
I know. The suggestions have been very good. As usual, every little bit of information adds to the whole knowledge. I was bringing it to the top to see if there might be others that have fished the lakes and have more information. You can NEVER have too much data on which to base a decision ;)

Are you visiting local tackle shops while in town?
That's where I'd start m'self.

I think it is. I work for an environmental testing company. Miranda used to own the lab there, and we bought it from them.
Looks like pretty wild yet beautiful country up there.

"You might fall in love with the place"
Good call, I spent 8 months in the Yukon and the time there haunts me: the solitude, the fishing, the wildlife and even the sourdoughs (local Yukoners) were all unforgetable! After being in the Yukon I went to Terrace for a month of being a fish bum.
Those 2 areas that I just mentioned still haunt me to this day, and I feel that every day I live in the lowermainland now is a waste. Don't go up there Dragon!
I am looking for the first chance I have to move up north 2 problems 1) Convincing the Girl and 2) Finding a decent job. IT WILL HAPPEN!!!
Sorry for the off topic rant!
Some north country fishing tips for you dragonspeed from a fly chuckers point of view:
1) Pike love big dry Flys: Row or walk around the perimeter of any good pike lake and cast big (1/0+) dry mouse or frog patterns at the heavy structure. The best areas are where heavy structure meets deep water. Just cast the big dry's tight to the structure and twitch em back in. The takes are explosive and I would reccommend wire tippet as well
2) Grayling are the finest dry fly fish you would want to target find yourself a good grayling creek and walk a KM from the bridge and you should find unreal fishing. I did the best on size 12 elk hair caddis but any good small dry will work.
3) Lakers will be staging for their fall spawning period they might make an unusual apperance in the shallows where they can be targeted with streamers on sinking lines
These things all worked in the Yukon for me and I hope they help you with your NWT quest!
Good luck
Pat

I took about 200 or so. I have to find a few spare minutes to see what I can filter.
