The scar below the fin is the one I cant figure out
i have seen marks like this on fish quite a few times in that exact spot and usually its from birds or scavengers trying to get access to the gut cavity of the fish. it isn't thin enough to be a knife mark. i think the seagulls or eagles use their beaks to puncture the belly...picking away at the meat around the puncture then open there mouths to stretch the wound.

definately birds, my buddy and i were fishing a few years ago in the canal. We turned around all the time to scare the seagulls away. when we finally went back to our fish we each had a fish that had been half eaten !! and all the others were missing their eyes  >:( >:(

Ribolovac, it would've been easy to tell if it was caught or not...did you notice any marks in it's mouth where it was hooked?  if there was, then it's obvious what happened. If there weren't any hook marks then it was probably an eagle or something else.

Sorry, it was my fish. I went home to get my licence so I could mark on it before coming back to get it.

I hope you left the fish there. ;)

So many more theories after my admission. Is it really that hard to believe that I actually caught a steelhead?
