Curing Shrimp?
« on: March 06, 2008, 08:27:51 AM »

Could anyone tell me how exactly to cure shrimp?  I've got a box of Borax and some Procure; I just need some direction.  And I was also wondering if its best to use the small/baby shrimp that come in those shrimp ring/trays from Save On Foods? or is it better to use larger prawns, and is it better to leave the shell on the prawns?

Thanks for any info anyone could provide!

when I cure my shrimp/ prawn I just put them in a small container..Put some procure on them, then shake it up. After they are all died lay them out on a paper towel to dry and sprinkle  salt on them to harder em up. Both the baby shrimp and prawn are effective for steelies. Some people think prawns are better and others think the shrimp are....Personally I like the prawns and use the baby shrimp more for coho.

Should I take the shell off the prawns or leave it on?  Also, what size of hook would be best for the larger prawns (for steelhead); and do you place the shrimp/prawn directly onto the hook, or is it better to put them through a bait/egg loop (i.e. what's the better way to present the bait)?

Thanks again for any/all replies!

There was a thread about this a couple of months ago with quite a bit of information in it:

Would adding Borax help them to last longer in the fridge?  or is Borax a bad idea for shrimp/prawns?

I use the pro cure pink, thaw the srimp ring prwns out, into a zip lock with the pro cure, shake well then I add pickling salt and ready to go. Another batch is thawing out the shrimp ring, food coloring with the orange, let soak for a few hours then add pickling salt in a zip lock, shake well and go fishing. Use one day and after coming home throw the bag in the freezer and use for the next trip.

I don't bother with the salt. Just procure it, let it dry a bit and store in borax.

Once you shake in the procure how long do you wait before you take them out and let them dry?

I have been using the "Double Red Hot" Procure - you want a bright bait to catch the fish's eye.

I also use salt on my prawns - I think it adds a bit of ocean scent to the bait and toughens it up considerably.
I leave the prawns in a ziplock bag with a bit of water and a bunch of salt.

If you let em sit in sugar (plain old white sugar) for a day they get a translucent look to them.
They are tough as you can get and look a lot like a jensenegg with the same smell and look as they should have.
